Sri Lanka has shown an example to the world on rehabilitation and social integration of ex-combatants by rehabilitating and conducting skills development training for nearly 10,000 ex-LTTE cadres in less than 20 months, President Mahinda Rajapaksa said.

Addressing a ceremony held at the Temple Trees today to mark the re-integration of 1,800 ex-LTTE cadres to society after they were rehabilitated and given skills development training in various crafts and trades, President Rajapaksa said rehabilitation programmes carried out in other countries have taken a minimum five years to finish.

“There were groups local and international keenly watching our rehabilitation programmes not to support them but to grab an opportunity to blame and disrupt them if there was the slightest of mistakes. It is a great relief that the rehabilitation and re-integration programmes have reached their final stage with the release of 1,800 misguided youth to their parents after transforming them to become useful and law abiding citizens” President Rajapaksa stressed.

President Rajapaksa said the youth will see a completely different environment when they go back to their villages from where the LTTE grabbed and took them away for military training amidst protest by themselves and their parents.

“You will see a completely different village from what you have seen some three or four years back. You can witness for yourself that your village or town has become a part of an aggressive development drive carried out by the government. You will see newly carpeted roads, new power lines, new bank branches and factories big and small sprouting out here and there in your area. The government requests that you be a partner of the progress in this development process and be successful in your life,” he said. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)
