Sri Lanka has failed to obtain a seat in the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) Council, in Geneva. Sri Lanka lost out to Bangladesh in the Asian region.

Bangladesh got 123 votes out of 161 and acquired the sixth position, beating giants like Australia, India and Thailand, to become the member.  Sri Lanka got only 79 votes while Pakistan got 93 votes, sources said.

The membership tenure will be four years.

The ITU Council was established in 1947 under the name, Administrative Council, following a decision taken by the 1947 Plenipotentiary Conference in the US.

Bangladesh is now slowly getting to be way ahead of us, since we have on our own opted to be in the league of nations such as Myanmar!

losing a seat in the council of ITU is not a big deal....it doesn´t mean that international community is against Sri Lanka

Bangladesh spent lot of money on this and got it...being a Muslim nation they automatically get over 40 votes and have to work for the rest. If you take 40 out from their 123 its 83. just 4 more than Sri Lanka------
They spent millions of $ to get this and SL hasn´t done that as it was not that important. we are any way a member of ITU and it is a matter of a decision to be made, if we need to get into the council by spending about 5million $ minimum..may be not worth...so pls dont blindly comment in these kind of situations....even UK didn´t get elected..does that mean whole world is against them?
its just how much you spend on lunches and dinners beofre the voting..Some countries consider it as important and spend lot of money and get it...

These are the elected countries for our region:
Region E (Asia and Australasia): 13 seats
Australia, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea (Republic of), Kuwait, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, United Arab Emirates

Our politicos tend to compare ourselves with Singapore... since it's not IN, nothing to worry ; )

Did you read the artcle ?
"Bangladesh got 123 votes out of 161 and acquired the sixth position, beating giants like Australia, India and Thailand, to become the member"
as per you comments Australia, India and Thailand also losing the international recognition. What a fool.

    mewan Thursday, 21 October 2010 07:09 AM

Wasantha, seems like you are happy for what happened.

How many millions did the mobile operators spent on the last conference at Hilton organized by TRC and still loss to Bangladesh.

Smart Aleck Thursday, 21 October 2010 06:14 AM

Aren't we "A Nation Like No Other" ?

    DXB Thursday, 21 October 2010 05:53 AM

This 12 Million was exposed by Ravi K

The Car driven by Ravi is almost 5 to 7 Million worth , then a country spending 12 Million per year on image building is even less worth than a ant's wing.

    malkanthi Thursday, 21 October 2010 05:31 AM

Is this a political set back?? The present chairman in the local body being secretary to H.E.?

    Wasantha Thursday, 21 October 2010 05:30 AM

Gradually we are losing the international recognition and this is the latest example. The image building campaign being carried out by the external affairs ministry at the expense of 12 million per year is yet to be worked. If we cannot contest a country like Bangladesh, we should think where we stand now.

Pol Booruwa Thursday, 21 October 2010 05:14 AM

Oh cool.. i thought Banagaladesh is very much behind Sri Lanka....
