Six drown in Polonnaruwa

Six people had drowned when their boat capsized in a Mahasenpura tank in Welikanda, Polonnaruwa today. According to Polonnaruwa Police DIG Kithsiri Dayananda, the boat toppled when these people were enjoying a boat ride.  Their bodies have been taken to the Welikanda Hospital, the Police said.     Its such a shame that all Sri Lankan's are not taught to swim from a young age. If like in the West everyone is encouraged to learn to swim this type of tragedies would not happen.

    It should be made mandatory for every boat to carry enough life jackets for its passengers. Very recently I went for a one hour boat ride in the sea with only few people (including myself) wearing life jackets.

    This is an eye opener to those over-enthusiastic parents and elders who just permit their children to have anything and everything according to their wish.
