It is called 'hailstorm' not shower of ice. The ice particles then 'melts' into water, not 'dissolve'. Correct words come with good education.

You are correct it should be called a 'hail storm' . it happens when the temperature of the air drops to below 9 degrees F.

Correct you are Idiot. It is called hailstorm.

Sorry, Mr. Meteorologist but how can there be snow without the temperature dropping below zero? That whole process of The Hail Storm where pieces of ice form has happened before. Read about it.

I'm not surprised. In Sri Lanka anything can happen.

    Sarani Sunday, 15 July 2012 01:20 AM

It's called hail storm, very common during thundershowers, in areas where the atmostpheric air has warm-air and cold-air clashing together.

    Hornet Sunday, 15 July 2012 04:49 AM

Yes it is called hailstorm a very common phenomena in northern regions of Pakistan. Sometimes it is very damaging.

I think you’ve mixed up Fahrenheit (F) and Celsius (C). Freezing point of water is 0C=32F so 9F (~ -27C) is way colder than 0C. All these numbers are corresponding to ambient conditions so low pressure at upper atmosphere may cause changes in these numbers.
NB: Language policy in 1956 is not the only or the prime cause for all of our problems!?!?!?!
