Sexual exploitation: Matter referred to AG

The Police Special Investigative Unit which conducted investigations into a complaint by a 22-year-old girl that she had been sexually exploited by a wealthy businessman since she was 12 was referred to the Attorney General for his advice.

When the case was taken up for hearing by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the police told Court they had referred the matter to the AG’s to clarify whether there was sufficient evidence to take action against the suspect.

In her complaint the girl said she was brutally raped by the businessman at a housing complex in Colombo last year and that her complaint to the Bambalapitiya Police turned out to be futile because the police for some reason had refrained from conducting an investigation.

In her lengthy complaint the girl said she had met the businessman by accident during a function held at a leading hotel when she was 12 years old. She said she had appeared in several programmes produced by a private television channel from the time she was very young.

The girl said the businessman contacted her over the phone and met her while she was attending tuition classes. She had said she was on intimate terms with the businessman because he had promised to marry her no sooner she reached marriageable age.

The girl said she was sexually exploited by the businessman in an unnatural manner and she had to even undergo surgery at a private hospital owing to an injury caused by the businessman.

Further magisterial inquiry was postponed for October 10. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
