The incident is most unfortunate. Present day Amateur Boxing conducted according to it's International Body, AIBA's rules the sport is safe and always protects the weaker boxer. In a boxing tournament the Referees and Judges are the watch dogs to ensure safety and fair play. The training arena under the control of trainers and coaches are the weak area, where safety standards are at the discretion of the respective trainers, coaches. The coaches have to ensure safety is practised and sparrings sessions equally matched according to weights and preferably age too. Most coaches and trainers in Sri Lanka are capable persons, whilst there may be a few sadistic trainers who would put their charges to the 'slaughter house' during training sessions. This area needs the close future attention of the ABA and the Sports Ministry and the department of sports, to ensure trainers and coaches follow safety standards like in a tournament during training sessions.
