The Supreme Court today directed the Attorney General to consider instructing the relevant authorities to postpone for one week the impugned mandatory training in military camps for the students who are eligible to enter the State Universities.

The Court made this direction in the wake of the training for the first batch which is scheduled to be commenced on May 23, 2011 at several Army Camps.

The Bench comprised Justices K.Sripavan, Chandra Ekanayake and Suresh Chandra.

Students for Human Rights filed a fundamental rights petition challenging the decision of the Higher Education Ministry allegedly compelling the students, who are eligible to enter University, into undergoing in-house training within military camps without their consent.

The Petitioner claims it is making this application on behalf of the student community in Sri Lanka who have passed the G C E Advanced Level held in August 2010 and who have gained sufficient marks to be eligible to enter the State Universities in Sri Lanka.

DID D.P.D went this training? Do he not have the leadership capacity now ?

    ishan Saturday, 21 May 2011 11:11 AM

90% of students cannot act like a leader? where did you find it?
Many graduates dont find it difficult to find a job in any sector, other than few Arts grads...Its also realted to the subject matter/curriculum not the leadership qualities you are refering to...Also antharaya is not in all universities, I agree antharayas agenda is not good for grads in many ways (e.g. ragging). The things like ragging has been controled in many unis and lecs are working hard on it....No one can force one particular group to go military traning..they should be given the choice

    Musthafa Saturday, 21 May 2011 10:50 AM

If Student get leadership training in military camps, it means military can give better leadership to the country, so MR can leave the place and give the chance to SF.

    susil Saturday, 21 May 2011 10:18 AM

As we have no money to follow private universities we are compelled to follow any training whether we like or not. That is the sin of poverty.

'Qualified' means they have qualified to enter universities.

    M.V.R.Perera Saturday, 21 May 2011 09:18 AM

why not train them in the the university they are about to enter by the leaders in the area

    MP Saturday, 21 May 2011 09:22 AM

Very unfortunate! Please start it as early as possible!
I had similar training when I was in school hostel. It was changed my life to vast extend and still following as a Manager. It is a known fact that 90% of University students cannot act like a leader. Private sector organizations rather dislike to recruit such people due to their lack of moral and high attitude of motivation. Ultimately government has to save them by giving state sector jobs.
This is where the gap exists. JVP is always happy to fish in the muddy water. If universities tend to produce leaders from the very beginning, It is become a challenging environment to so called “Antharaya”

The Leadership Training Programme, one of the steps of militarization of state, has developed a paradoxical argument whether the Army, which is qualified for military leadership, is the best institution in the country to impart knowledge of leadership to university students by spending more than Rs. 200 million just for three weeks.

    hgt Saturday, 21 May 2011 09:16 AM

well then let the army go and kill terrorists or whatever it is that they do. I dont want to be trained by a gang like that.

    Perera Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:57 AM

not all army personnel are uneducated and not all AL passed students are educated. passing AL is not criteria to say educated. Good leaders are not always educated. i do not mind to have a leadership training from a uneducated army person if he or she really excel in that field. once qualify for Universities, some people are arrogant , but it all depends on the knowledge acquired not paper qualifications.

These qualified students may know what they learnt for A/L. But they are many things they don't know about stuff needed in life? How many of them would know about firstaid? How many of them would know how to change a tire of a car?

    shan Saturday, 21 May 2011 03:24 AM

they should give a choice to students. not send them by force. 1st SB should send he's kids to a leadership training.

    fgs Saturday, 21 May 2011 03:24 AM

No thanks, we still dont want to train under these guys

    Yehiya-Doha Saturday, 21 May 2011 02:11 AM

This is good without political motivate. University student matter must consider as good vision. Most of them are very poor.

    Silva Friday, 20 May 2011 04:55 PM

Why not send all MP's for 3 Months Training before they take the Oats or 1 Year Training before Nominations.

    Epa Friday, 20 May 2011 04:28 PM

So called educated people divided and destroyed our country.we suffered badly over 30 years because of these so called experties.

    SeanD Friday, 20 May 2011 12:10 PM

However an uneducated army soldier can be much more disciplined and good in leading than a "qualified student"
should we put down forces and say they are "uneducated"? if they entered the university and not choose to fight like a brave soldier willing to sacrifice life.. there would have been more violence in this country:)
if it is a proper training under inspection this might do some good!!

    palithaeka Friday, 20 May 2011 12:24 PM

Thanks to Judicial System in Sri Lanka. How can provide training by set of people can not enter the universities. Foolish politicians will learn a lesson

shehan jayawardene Friday, 20 May 2011 12:05 PM

Why one week only? This is a sham. Just like the 18th amendment was passed...so will this. This one week postponement joke is just to show the world that the judiciary is independent.

    Wijendra Saturday, 21 May 2011 04:39 AM

Qualified students? They only know things in 3 subject areas they cramed nothing else.

    Jayani Friday, 20 May 2011 11:58 AM

SL army is the most disciplined force in the world. Why you are worried to send female students for the training at army camps.

    MMCP Friday, 20 May 2011 11:27 AM

First, send the politicians for this leadership training, as they are supposed to lead the economy and people of the country.

    ishan Friday, 20 May 2011 10:04 AM

    Nice to hear!!!!!

    Aje Saturday, 21 May 2011 07:37 AM

Sadly discipline of the university students of this country has severely deteriorated. Most of them do not properly respect their lecturers. All we know how they treat their new coming brothers and sisters. It is clear that university administration has failed to implement discipline among students and this is right time to bring another party to the picture. As we know school cadets also getting a training in military camps for a certain period. This is not such a military one but leadership training. Sadly some people commented here have questioned the qualifications of forces officials to train uni students. We clearly know how many medical , engineering and other graduates serving country in all forces. On the other hand these people must realize that A/L result is not the only qualification in the world. remember education without discipline is worthless…!

    Wimal_Modawansa Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:50 AM

Why should they go to Military camps. The MP'S in each constituancy could provide them leadership training.

    aceman Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:44 AM

Uneducated?? Which rock have you been living under buddy?? We have a professional highly capable army.

The same army who defeated the what was the world's deadliest terrorist group. Which I am sorry to say, most of the people who have written their comments here have forgotten.

And in case the young university hopefuls do not know it, similar forms of training is also offered in the coporate world in the form of 'outward bound' or leadership training.

The idea is not military training, or brainwashing to obey commands, its about getting the self confidence to face challenging situations. This is what will be taught in the leadership training conducted by the military.

    ajith Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:41 AM

Calm down..There is nothing to get panicked!!!!
As you know Military Training is mandatory in many countries like Singapore,Israel,South Korea,Russia,China and many more......
I am sure students will be more disciplined and sure to be mentally toughed after they are been trained.
We will see no strikes in Universities and it will be a slap in the face of JVP

Arjuna Aluwihare Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:31 AM

Idea of leadership training good- but NOT in army camps; by private sector organisations with suitably defined program and objectives

    A.D Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:34 AM

Hell are you mad ,Where the hell did you come from ???????

    MagodisThuma Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:18 AM

Yes... we have too many leaders !.

    YP Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:10 AM

then would u stay in a camp for 3 weeks or would u send ur daughter? How many army desserters so far when talking abt descipline?

    MahindaP Saturday, 21 May 2011 08:07 AM

Just beacuse some one passed AL , do you think they are educated. Is that the ultimate. There are so many intelligent , brave , innovative people in our brave forces.

So called educted would have shit in their pants .. if sent for the battle front.

You should know that education is not by hearting books , past paers & folowing tution classes . The real learning come from the living in the society, by showing that you are ready to learn good things from anybody in the society.

    Dinithi Saturday, 21 May 2011 07:38 AM

Guys, it is not the common army officers who will do this training. It will be the people officers who train the army and they are internationally qualified. Army soldiers and army special training officers are different calibre people mate. In fact these people when they retire take training assignments to majaor companies in SL and indeed Asia to train corporate leaders for a lot of money. I know personally they are soo damn good.

    Sheriff Friday, 20 May 2011 09:54 AM

    well done

However the bottom line is:: Ragging should be eradicated.. SB's move is very practical and clear.

    trinco Saturday, 21 May 2011 07:18 AM

This training initiative should be deferred until the army clears its name about the serious allegations made in the UN panel report.

    Prasanna Saturday, 21 May 2011 06:54 AM

Milatary traning is good , then these guys will be deciplined, this is done in singapor the results are excellents.

shehan jayawardene Saturday, 21 May 2011 06:19 AM

Most soldiers who joined the armed forces in the past few years, did so because of the enticing salary, or because they just couldn't get a job or because they were hoodwinked by the TV ads which made it seem cool to be in the armed forces. Only when they went to the front did they realize that war was hell. That is the reason for the thousands of desertions. Only a small number joined out of true or blind patriotism.

    Dakuna Saturday, 21 May 2011 06:33 AM

Heloooo Undregraduates - Army too is a proffessional outfit.

adhil iqbal Saturday, 21 May 2011 05:45 AM

    bad move

although i think that sending students to military camps was an idea verging on nonsense, it was move nevertheless, to crush the fool hardy-wasting government money- strike philic- souls of these students, all you guys know what problems these people made over minor issues, without any concern that the free education that these people are getting is worth in its millions.

so bad move superior court, at least should have waited and see how effective.

Ravi Anandappa Saturday, 21 May 2011 04:51 AM

This training in Militery camps is very good but the Ugc should have given Students and parents more tome to prepare all the necessary items to be taken. We received the letter on last Thursday
