Russian couple nabbed fishing

A Russian couple who had illegally fished ornamental fish in the Nilaweli Pigeon Island had been fined Rs. 50,000 per person by Trincomalee Chief Magistrate U.L.A. Azhar.

An individual who had been operating the boat used for fishing had also been fined Rs. 25,000 for assisting the Russian couple. The passports of the couple - named B. V. Brukket and S. Galika had been confiscated by the Courts while the Magistrate had ordered the fine to be paid prior to April 28.

The couple had been spear-fishing at a small island which belongs to the National Gardens of the Pigeon Island. The raid had been conducted by the Wildlife Department following a tip-off by several villagers. ( Amadoru Amarajeeva)

    Ideally, the culprits should be referred to Doctor Maravin to mete out proper punishment. Since he is at the moment embroiled in some fishy business, this is the most appropriate time.
