The prison officials have been instructed to carry out an inquiry regarding the facts surrounding the clash between the police and the Welikada inmates, Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Dew Gunasekera told Daily Mirror online

The Minster added that the police had conducted similar raids in prisons island wide in a drive to eradicate drugs from prisons and that the raid in Welikada took place after a Court warrant was obtained.

Further the Minister said that the animosity between the police and the inmates would have also contributed to the clash as police officers were the reason why prisoners were behind bars. (Daily Mirror online)

Install signal jammers inside the prison and ban mobile usage to prison officers.

    Jukian Monday, 08 November 2010 01:39 AM

Mr Minister, Send MERWYN SILVA or DUMINDA SIVA or BOTH SILVAS to the prison. Then you can get a netter report..

    amarakoon Monday, 08 November 2010 02:32 AM

This is the correct and simple solution rather than going behind the culprits who brings phones into prisons. Prison officials may use land phones for official use.
Absence of cell phones will prevent drug kigpins operating from prison premises.

Avi Jonathan Monday, 08 November 2010 02:33 AM

Hey.. this is best minister I have seen after long time, where he does his best.

    Jayatillaka Sunday, 07 November 2010 03:28 PM

This unfortunate incident shows how much certain sections of our society hate the police force. The police wont get much sympathy from the public as long as they are being used as pawns of politicians.

According to COPE report, the real criminals are still in public, people who couldn't afford a fine of 2000 Rs go to jail, same with corrupted police officers. It seems the prisoners are worried about this and rioting now.

    sw Sunday, 07 November 2010 11:29 AM

This appears to be some sort of drug bust, they are looking for drugs at the wrong place without going after the drug Kingpins. This is a sure way of creating a drug monopoly.

    AF Sunday, 07 November 2010 11:39 AM

Why you need any report on this? You think prisoners have right to assault the police?

Eliminating drug menace from every nook and corner is most welcome, but has to be done in a more organised manner to avoid such incidents.

    RAY G Sunday, 07 November 2010 12:26 PM

Drugs in prison?? You must be joking! Maybe the Welikada Complex has been converted into a Holiday Resort (Woodstock Style) and the Police were not informed about it.

    Ranjith Sunday, 07 November 2010 01:13 PM

Govt media should put the responsibility to SF & Udula at the welikada prision.

Prof Wickramatillake Sunday, 07 November 2010 01:22 PM

Dear Minister, first find how drugs get there?

True Sri Lankan Sunday, 07 November 2010 01:32 PM

Why can't we install CCTV system to monitor what's going on inside the prision. This is the best way to track corrupted guards and prisoners links and their businesses.
