Inquiry into Welikada clash

The prison officials have been instructed to carry out an inquiry regarding the facts surrounding the clash between the police and the Welikada inmates, Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Minister Dew Gunasekera told Daily Mirror online

The Minster added that the police had conducted similar raids in prisons island wide in a drive to eradicate drugs from prisons and that the raid in Welikada took place after a Court warrant was obtained.

Further the Minister said that the animosity between the police and the inmates would have also contributed to the clash as police officers were the reason why prisoners were behind bars. (Daily Mirror online)

This is the correct and simple solution rather than going behind the culprits who brings phones into prisons. Prison officials may use land phones for official use.
Absence of cell phones will prevent drug kigpins operating from prison premises.

According to COPE report, the real criminals are still in public, people who couldn't afford a fine of 2000 Rs go to jail, same with corrupted police officers. It seems the prisoners are worried about this and rioting now.
