More Sri Lankan refugees in India are ready to return to Sri Lanka, says the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).

"UNHCR is observing a trend of increasing numbers of Sri Lankan refugees returning home from India compared with last year," Jennifer Pagonis, deputy representative for the agency, told IRIN in Colombo.

Thousands fled to India because of the decades-long conflict between government forces and the now defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who had been fighting for an independent Tamil homeland. Of the more than 100,000 refugees in India, about 72,000 are living in 112 refugee camps in the state of Tamil Nadu in southern India, with about 34,000 living outside the camps.

In the first eight months of this year, some 1,150 refugees voluntarily returned home with UNHCR assistance compared with 843 for all of 2009, she said. "We expect this upward trend to continue," Pagonis said. (Source: irinnews.org)

Please dont come. Stay where were you. We love Sri lanka. No more terrorists

As a gesture of goodwill & reconcilliation, we should arrange a welcome and speedy re-settlement to our fellow Sri Lankans. At least, it will look good on the SL Govt. in the eyss of the world.

They don't have to live as 3rd class citizens in a camp in India. Let them come back to their native land and live a decent life, now that the war is over.

All em in western countries may just live there coz we might not really need them coz they have been unpatriotic. Now that most have citizenship of the west they are better off there. We don't need another war coz of em .

Most who jump about in the west did so NOT coz of their concern for the ones in SL but coz they don't want the western countries to say" Now that the war is over, all u guys can go back" and revoke the citizenship which they received after filing bogus asylum applications.

Thas, from which planet are U from ! U call TNadu and refugee camps are heaven. Please advise them to stay put where they are.

The UNHCR , I believe, is trying to put the cart before the horse in this instant. Many IDPs in Sri Lanka are not resettled yet.

If UNHCR is convinced the ground situation is adequate to repatriate the Tamil refugees in India to Sri Lanka, they can do so. Unfortunately, the situation is not yet conducive.

Repatriation of Tamil refugees in India should not follow the political agenda of India.

Please treat it as a humanitarian issue.

@SHAN & Phil: We can understand your mentality. The moment it says refugees in TN are ready to comeback, it hearts your feelings. Because in other words it says Sri Lanka is back to normal; Sri Lanka is peaceful and people are ready to welcome their fellow citizens who lived as 2nd class citizens in TN.
