A group of UNP members of the Central Provincial Council (CPC) held a “secret” meeting at a Kandy hotel today where UNP leader Ranil Wickramasingha drew flak over his appointment of the Leader of the opposition in the Central Provincial Council.

At the meeting held today the CPC members discussed the decision taken by the UNP leader in appointing K.K. Piyadasa as the Leader of the opposition of the Central Provincial Council. The post was made vacant after the former leader of the opposition of the Central Provincial Council Wasantha Aluwihare was elected to Parliament.

Speaking to Daily Mirror online Chief Organizer of the Opposition Lucky Jayawardana said that they had decided not to approve the appointment made by the UNP Leader.

UNP Central Provincial Council member Sanjeewa Kaviratne said they cannot approve the decision taken by the UNP leader adding that the appointment should be done by the CPC members themselves.

“There should be democracy within the party. We can’t be in the opposition for ever. There should have been a discussion with the CPC members before a decision was taken,” another UNP CPC member Rohana Bandaranayake said adding that they have written to the UNP Leader and the executive committee members over the matter. thumbs up ransam ! Look at the National List.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:43 AM

Can anybody earn posts under Ranil. He only treats Royalists and people from colombo 07

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 05:05 AM

Graham, you are very correct. Ranil is a genuine leader who has experience like no other politician in the present day political arena. He is respected by the international community as well. You can attack him if all other politicians in this country are without any wrongdoings. Unfortunately, majority of the people do not recognise this. Leaders like Ranil suit to countries like in Switzerland, UK, etc where gentleman politics still prevail

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 05:32 AM

Ranil Go home Otherwise for UNP it is RIP.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 05:45 AM

UNP has to decentralize the process of appointments to all posts including the leadership and Mr. Wickramasinghe has to take a stand like Mr. John Major did in UK some time back and contest his position in the party if he still wants to justify his stay there.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 05:51 AM

Machan, if he is respected, and is a good leader, people will follow him. How can you be a leader if you dont have people following you? He might be a honorable man, but that doesnt make him a good leader.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 06:28 AM

Ranil had many a chance but could never make the UNP win at an election. With him the UNP is always a loser. Gentlemanly politics obviously does not work in Sri Lanka. UNP has to choose a leader from among those available to replace Ranil. If not the UNP must be content to be in the opposition for ever. There is no other choice.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:15 AM

Wonder why the meeting has to be so secret ??

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:28 AM

It is not just the fault of Ranil, but the way of MR, defeated the UNP. In fact, Ranil is a good leader having all the professional respect. Remember he could take the power back to UNP in 2001, after the tragic loss in 1994. It is the skill he has. Sajith had held only a deputy minister post just for 2 years. Do you recommend him to be the leader of UNP?

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 07:55 AM

Ranil should think twice, he is loosing day by day his vote base, we are very strong UNPers family @ 15, but last two instances voted for GSF? leadership qualities???

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 08:35 AM

This is from government who want to keep Ranil.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:31 AM

Ranil should offer party leadership to a person who is respected by all the people. Even not UNP members and who voted for the party have that view. Mr. Ranil, listen to people and go.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 10:02 AM

If he was the President of Sri Lanka he will be worse leader than MR

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 10:09 AM

I note that Graham, Saman, Meth, Ayanthi, Chandana and Gayan Samarasekera want Ranil to continue as UNP leader. Do you all not understand that with Ranil the UNP is losing every election? Do you all want the UNP to be in the opposition always? Why dont the UNP give a chance to another person to be the leader of the UNP and try to win the next election? With Ranil there is no hope for UNP. Please do not make excuses for Ranil.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:00 AM

    ABSOLUTELY TRUE.
BUT ............................ CANNOT BE PROUD OF HIM.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:09 AM

I am a green blood UNP supporter, and not at all a representative of the govt. But my concern is who is there to replace Ranil? He is the last of the cream of the UNP consisted of Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali, et al. I respect Ranil as a well educated intellectual. Also I have to think that the UNP would have already been scattered if Ranil was not there. Do you underestimate his decision to get Gen Fonseka as the presidential candidate? Just imagine the way that UNP secured its reputation by earning 40%, against MR.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:14 AM

Rohan seems desperate with results of the last series of elections. However, as I understand, what you think is to change the pillow for headache... But take medicine.. Politically aim the Sinhalese and address them. Keep the pillow there. Keep Ranil as the leader..

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:14 AM

    "LOYAL TO ROYAL"

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:55 AM

Yeah.. .half of our family also voted for GSF. Let Sajit come in Ranil and you retire with your Chaminda Clic.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 11:56 AM

You mean Ranil , of course if Ranil became President we will be in a mess by now. Thank God Ranil lost, though I voted for him in that elections.

    Friday, 30 April 2010 09:15 PM

His choice of naming K. K. Piyadasa for the post, is laudable - Piyadasa being a staunch party supporter. He comes from humble origins and know the people's heart. The UNP should learn to support these true UNPers and not those media-made-personalities, who come from so-called 'blue-blood' families.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 01:09 AM

    No one is indispensable.

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 04:17 PM

I wonder whether this man knows the meaning of SHAME...?

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 04:34 PM

It's high time that the UNP membership start a new campaign to reform with a change starting from the very top.

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 05:09 PM

Mr. Wickramasinghe, to be a leader, you have to make people want to follow you. Nobody wants to follow someone who doesn't know where he is going!

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 05:27 PM

Shame on you Ranil, it's time to step-down!

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 08:46 PM

If he has any self-respect, he should step-down with dignity - before he is disgracefully pushed.

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 08:55 PM

THE ONLY HONOURABLE THING THIS MAN CAN DO IS TO STEP-DOWN, EVEN AT THIS LATE STAGE!

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:13 PM

You guys want Ranil to step down? Well, then who should be the new leader? I guess you will name Sajith, right? Just because he can shout, it doesn't necessarily mean that he is a good leader ...

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 09:22 PM

I think the UNP must remain as it is. It's not Ranil's problem alone.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:24 AM

Ranil should immediately and gracefully step down for all the miserable failures in successive elections and pave the way for Sajith's dynamic and effectective leadership. This is the grassroot cry!

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 12:58 AM

why not allow central provincial counil members to appoint the leader. I hope the up country UNPers fight for the DEMOCRACY where as Ranil has ruined the
    oldest Democratic party

    Wednesday, 28 April 2010 04:14 PM

I think the leader of the UNP Hon. Ranil Wickramasinghe
should step down with dignity and allow the younger members of the party to take over . overhaul the party and get ready to face the next election. until then be a responsible opposition and support the govt in all their development endevours which ultimately will benefit all citizens of SriLanka.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 01:10 AM

For the sake of the Party, for the sake of the country, for the sake of democracy, and for God's sake, go! Enough is enough.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 02:12 AM

after reading the comments made by various people i feel amoung the UNP there is no team work. why should we bother about the captan if rest of the players get together and play like one team. i have seen in UNP today just only putting the blame on the leader most of the UNPs are not united.the last election is a clear indication.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 02:46 AM

Talking about Ranil is absolute waste of valuable time.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 03:44 AM

First, Change the UNP constitution to appoint the leader by those who are in active politics in UN (people's representantives at all levels) and not by all officiala and members appointed by Ranil. Then Ranil Should resign and contest for re election with any other possible nominees.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 03:58 AM

Poor Ranil ....let him wait for another 6 years.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:05 AM

Ranil ....as UNPer or a member of the oppotition they support the party but not the person. So as a leader you need to think abouth the party not yourself. When there is & was a loud voice raised for change in the leadership for so many times you need to give some consideration to that group also if you are a true democratic leader. As a party UNP & as a group opposition needs you but not as a leader.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:09 AM

He is the best man for Sri Lanka.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:22 AM

Don't blame only the leader. Everybody should be responsible for this.No point giving posts for the sake of giving unless there is a definite program to organize the grass root support. Let them earn the posts like Premadasa did in 1977.

    Thursday, 29 April 2010 04:26 AM

No, not because he can shout, but because he has a following among the people. And because he is the only chance that UNP might have in the next election.

    Jaques:
    All the world's a stage,
    And all the men and women merely players;
They have their exits and their entrances,
