The Railway Locomotive Engine Drivers’ Union this evening decided to suspend the railway drivers’ strike which continued for five days.
Railway Drivers’ Union Chief Secretary K.A.U.Konthasinghe said, it was decided to suspend the strike following a discussion held yesterday with Transport Ministry Secretary Dhammika Perera and representatives of the Railway Drivers’ Union.
He further said during the three-hour meeting, the Transport Secretary agreed to provide solutions to the demands including the salary problem. He also said, the railway drivers would suspend the strike and the railway transport service would function normally from today.
The strike was launched on February 13 to protest the removal of Railway Drivers’ Union Chairman I.L.K. Dissanayake from the supervisory post .
The Transport Ministry said although they requested Transport Minister Kumara Welgama to hand over the Supervisory Officer Post to the Unions Chairman again, the Minister had refused to oblige. (Mahinda Nissanka)
