I will NOT allow my son to go and work in such places where the Law is taken to some goons hands. This is not preventing but escalating.
Where was these heroes when the protestors were against the Medics? Now its more dangerous and what is the guarantee for the freedom of practicing the profession?

Same thing happens in Kalpitiya also. People does not value the services of Medical Doctors. The Doctors has a right to think of their life before saving others. The thuggery MUST end and its the existing Government responsible to put law into order.

Talking about the history of this area.. One of the previous Medical officers who worked in this hospital was stabbed to death even after he was transferred to another station and up to this date nobody is charged with the murder.

Now think who is at fault!! At most the only thing that delayed the treatment to the unfortunate patient was his own son who was drunk and intervened with the medical care!!

We still continued work amidst all that and on the day of the funeral all hell broke loose and they attempted to break into the hospital with the casket. At which point we had to suspend our duties to safe guard our lives which were under threat.

Inspite of all this the blame was thrown at the doctor who was smart enough to catch it even while there was nobody to give a proper history and a vague presentation that would have taken longer to diagnose.
A day after the incident the son of the deceased who was one of the 2 people who were arrested turns up at the doctors dispensary and delivers a death threat and posters go up on walls demanding the removal of the doctor from the station.

That showed signs of a complete heart block probably due to a heart attack and the patient was transfered to a General hospital soon after the ECG was done. 12 hours after admission to the General Hospital the patient passed away and the post-mortem showed that all the main arteries to the heart were clogged.

Even before the doctor could come from his room the 2 drunk men have attacked one of the labourers and once the doctor came to see the patient they have shouted out at him in filth and kept on intervening with the medical care give to the patient. Finally the police was called in and the 2 men were arrested before the doctor could properly examine the patient. Even though it was just an abdominal pain because the blood pressure was low and an ECG was ordered.

The real incident that led to the close down was that the Medical officer in charge of the hospital was given a death threat.. This is peripheral unit and not a district hospital to start with.. Manned with only 3 MBBS doctors we cater for nearly 300 OPD patients and 40+ inward patients everyday.. A patient (who was intoxicated) was brought in with an abdominal pain during early hours of the 18th of December accompanied by 2 drunk men..

What has happened to our people? They want to threaten the hospital staff for their lives and when the staff stay away they want them back.. Is this our culture? Do we have a culture? May be its the three wheeled culture now.
