A ‘five-step strategy’ proposal to revamp the United National Party (UNP) was handed over to party Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe by UNP MP for the Kurunegala District Dayasiri Jayasekara this evening.

In the proposal, Jayasekara advises that the party’s second level leadership needs to be to strengthened at this hour and that key appointments should be made in the party with consensus of members by election.

He added that the party’s provincial council and local government members should be empowered to reorganize the party at grassroots level. (KB)

Revamp the UNP? Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha, ha

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 08:29 AM

i agree with makalu's comments. he is trying to pont out something important which people who want quick results wont understand. Changing leadership is not the solution or is easy. There is nothing wrong with Ranil. He is good enough. Dont just jump and complicate urselves after the defeat. This is not a defeat at all. 45% didnt vote means all these are against the govt. so peopl didnt give a clear mandate to MR at all as some fools reckon.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 08:27 AM

We heard this story before. In the end everybody ends up eating grass, instead reorganizing the party at grassroots level.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 07:43 AM

I hope Sajith would be the next leader of UNP, He can bring the Victory to the people.
    Good luck.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 07:27 AM

Don't think people will vote for Sajith for his name. He has to re-organize the party at grass root levels. all electorates should have the party offices. At least once a month village level sub committees should meet and decide what to do to win the hearts of the masses. They should educate the public about the unfair activities of the government. They should canvass from house to house.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 06:59 AM

After every defeat blame the govt. for not having a free and fair election. If Ranil was a good leader he should have arranged measures to counter the unfair activities at the polling booths. As a young boy when we played cricket matches with the adjoining village, first match was lost due to Hora Scores by the other team. We have not taken our Scorer with us for the match. But we never failed to take a scorer with us from the second match. As a young boy we took counter measures to win the game honourably. Being a leader of the most powerful party Ranil, Tissa, Karu or any other donkey could not take counter measures for 'Hora Chanda' - We should keep Ranil for ever so UNP can always be in the opposition. Parakrama.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 06:58 AM

Sagith should be the leader, Ranil and Karu can help the sajith Team. UNP can gain the victory within one year.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 05:59 AM

The majority of the opinion with regard to UNP leadership is for RW to step down. Why can't he honorably step down as a gentleman and let the younger vibrant people revamp the party.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 05:44 AM

You are wrong. Captain can be blamed for the defeat of the team if those defeats are caused by his inaction and incompetence. You cant merely equate a political party to a captain. Because the leader of a party has more powers vested in decision making, and specially in the UNP, the leader has unlimited executive powers, which leaves no room for democracy within it.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 05:32 AM

Lahiru, Leadership means commanding the party towards goals and objectives with subordinates. So he is loosing his members day by day. One day there will be a unp only with RW. if he continues.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 05:28 AM

Ranil should step down, We noticed Ranil has less personal relationships, he doesn't know to win the public.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 05:08 AM

people who think Ranil must stay should get their head examined by a psychologist. A record leader is he with so many election defeats and and so many of his own members defecting to the UPFA. Mahinda must be praying that this fellow will be UNP leader for many years to come. When the UNP won the general election he could not even last the usual term of government. He is no leader His election defeats must certainly find a place in the guiness book of world records.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:08 AM

The UNP is currently overwhelmed by confusion and frustration brought about by successive electoral defeats. The party put itself into this unhappy position because of its own politically unwise actions. In a country where more than 70% of the voters come from a Sinhala Buddhist background, it clearly failed to identify with the interests of this larger majority. As a result, the substantial support base it enjoyed in good olden days in the rural Buddhist Sinhala hinterland got eroded in substantial measure. It would be naive to fix the blame for this situation only on RW.

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 04:06 AM

It is pointless blaming the leader of the party for defeats. if the elections are not free and fair

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:17 PM

I hope the most important point is included - Replace the leader!

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 02:08 AM

Is there any suggestion here that RW is a great leader? If so, please think of the substantial disarray the Grand Old Party has been thrust into under his charge .

    Tuesday, 04 May 2010 12:00 AM

Dayasiri should be given an important position with power.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 10:56 PM

please take steps to ask RW to go home. support our campaign by joining to the Facebook - Ranil Wickramasinghe time to go-

    Monday, 03 May 2010 10:15 PM

Changing 'faces' will not make any difference to the UNP - but a change in policies will!

    Monday, 03 May 2010 10:02 PM

Nobody seems to be thinking clearly!

    Monday, 03 May 2010 08:47 PM

There is no point in any 'reorganization,' without replacing Ranil.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 05:46 PM

The unfortunate thing is that Sri Lankns will never understand the true value of a great leader ...

    Monday, 03 May 2010 05:26 PM

It is very easy to blame the leader, like we blame the captain of a cricket team. A 'captain' cannot win a match if he is not supported by his 'team' - it should be a 'team effort.' Others too have to listen to what the 'captain' says and play as a 'team,' without engaging in 'match fixng.' Therefore, removing Ranil, at this moment, is not very advisable. Sudden changes (like instant solutions) will be harmful to the party ...

    Monday, 03 May 2010 04:38 PM

We have waited long enough! Just look at RW's track record: Over 40 party top-rungers have left . The voter base has eroded. Many elections have been lost. The UNP has become a laughing stock. RW talks about 'democracy' - firstly, there must be democracy in his own party. Leaders must be appointed through an election. If RW is so 'good,' he should resign and contest the election.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:52 PM

Some foolish members in UNP are unable to realize the real situation of the party defeat and try to find quick solutions. In case RW is removed from leadership of the party, definitely the party will break into many parts. Best option is to wait only for one year and see the situation and take whatever suitable action,I propose.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:47 PM

A good contribtion to rebiuld the Party but even the Leader of the Party should be elected with immediate effect at an election with general consensus

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:42 PM

ORGANISE THE UNP ACCORDING TO AMERICAN PARTY SYSTEM.LEADERS ARE ELECTED FROM PARTY ELECTIONS.THEN IT WILL BE EXPAND TO ALL OTHER PARTIES TOO.SRI LANKAN POLITICAL SYSTEMS WILL BE CHANGE FOREVER THIS WAY.

    Monday, 03 May 2010 03:28 PM

Ranil should GO - then Sajith can re-organise the party with the young members.
