The price of a loaf of bread will have to be increased if the general prices of goods increase after the elections, the chairman of the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association (ACBOA) N.K. Jayawardena said yesterday.
“If the prices of goods keep increasing further especially after the elections then we will have to think about increasing the price of a loaf of bread,” Mr. Jayawardena said. According to him the price of bread will have to be increased unless the general price levels decrease.
“The price of labour, electricity and gas all increased lately and we have not increased but if the general price levels increase after the elections then we will also have to consider increasing the price,” Mr. Jayawardena said.
Meanwhile Mr. Jayawardena said that he was hoping that the general price would come down although considering the current trend in prices it was unlikely to happen.
Under the Consumer Affairs Act the Consumer Affairs Authority can insist on a legal weight of 450 grams per loaf of bread although they cannot insist on a price change since it doesn’t fall under the essential foods category. (Sumaiya Rizvi)

The bakers are giving notice already, or have they been asked to ? In any case this will be denied as usual until it becomes a reality after the elections!

Not "IF", definitely the prices of everything will go up soon after the Local Government Polls.
People know very well about it. Then not only loaf of bread but also prices of all essential items including rice will go up.
Now everything is beyond the reach of the ordinary man.
