President Mahinda Rajapaksa said he would provide opportunities for the people to travel between Colombo and Polonnaruwa within 90 minutes in two more years and assured the provisions would be made to begin work immediately.

“It took seven hours to travel from Medamulana to Colombo in the past but now it takes only four hours to complete the journey. I will assure that the people in Polonnaruwa will be able to travel to Colombo in one and a half hours in two years,” he told the ceremony held to declare open several projects in the Polonnaruwa Royal College yesterday.

He said at present almost all the roads in Polonnaruwa had been carpeted and funds had been allocated to carpet 250 more roads. “Several people voiced concern against road carpeting projects we were carrying out at the beginning but we won’t stop doing what’s needed to be done,” he said.(DS)

Talking about reaching Polonnaruwa in 90 minutes, why not first improve the night and weekend bus service in and around Colombo which has been neglected for more than three decades.

It would be appreciated if highways are done up to Kandy and Ratnapura also. Those are the 2 cities that takes a good 4-5 hours to reach from Colombo. via DM iPad app

No way that one can travel by highway from Polonnaruwa to Colombo in 90 minutes when it takes 90 or more minutes from Kottawa entrance to the expressway to get to Matara!!

We have no objection. But for heavens sake, please do so to travel to Kandy. It takes over 4 1/2 hours to do so now. One day it took me 6 hours. It is almost impossible to overtake a slow moving heavy or any vehicle, and only possible place is a long straight stretch. In such places invariably there are pedestrian crossing, and if you overtake there, we motorists know the rest. RDA pls check these places as some are in most absurd places. No pedestrian is going to walk over 100 metres to cross at a PC.
