A prominent Colombo politician is behind the attack on the UNP protest yesterday, but we will not be deterred by these obstacles as we owe it to the people, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya told Daily Mirror online.

“We don’t believe the police version of the account and several police personnel not taking action when these thugs were roaming about freely”, he said

The Deputy leader added that the UNP was conducting a peaceful protest calling for the release of former army commander Sarath Fonseka when they came under attack in Borella.

Several person were injured and vehicles were badly damaged when an armed group attacked the protesters with swords, bicycle chains, knifes, iron rods and Molotov cocktails, Karu Jayasuriya said

Furthermore he said that  the protest which consisted of 800 or more supporters were peacefully calling for the release of  former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka as they believe that he was behind the suppression of the LTTE and  played a key role in winning the peace.

“It is an insult to the country when a peaceful protest is attacked on its Independence Day, what Independence is there? When freedom of expression is curtailed and freedom of assembly is not guaranteed.  This is not the first time these incidents have occurred”, UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya said.  (Daily Mirror online)

    Politikka Saturday, 05 February 2011 01:27 PM

At least a singal politician is behind every attack

    Matalan Saturday, 05 February 2011 01:42 PM

HM - Egypt was the same (man!). Since, they had the (solo)peace pact with Israel, there was peace at the border. But within, gradual erosion of freedom for most sectors except for some middle class & influential positions who reaped special benefits from Govt. - as a result, President's mandate read over 93% at 3 elections. But now we know. This is a timely free reminder to the President & Co that they cannot get away with murder. Every conspirator caught with their hand in the candy jar will be held to account.

Pain in the neck Saturday, 05 February 2011 01:46 PM

no matter which party is the president from, thugs are a premium tool to crack down protesters. it is always the history. no remedy for this in our uneducated sri lanka.

    I Hussein Saturday, 05 February 2011 07:33 AM

Now you have started it, no turning back. You will get more momentum and support if you chose the right path.
Dont give up and get support from JVP too. Let Sajith take a leading role as well.
Why dont let the public know who that 'wise' CMB politico is?

    Unp eatig ,eating,,What Egypt??/
    Leaders are hooray run!!

    Dillon Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:22 AM

That's not going to happen because majority of the people having been living in this country since JR,RP and CBK were ruling, therefore this is nothing new. Politicians tend to forget about the human rights when they are in the ruling party.

    Lal Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:18 AM

Dash coconut in all devalayas result will be there soon

    Kari Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:23 AM

Government will suppress these things at any cost, as the popularity of the governors is fading day by day.

    Commonsense Saturday, 05 February 2011 05:38 PM

We should obey the court decision.Otherwise this country has gone to dog.Any person in this country should obey these rules. So we can't give one rule for Mr.SF.If it is what about other prisoners?

    Alien Saturday, 05 February 2011 05:51 PM

Yes lets do that and then get ruled by an US puppet like what's happening in Egypt..how does that sound??

    silva Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:39 AM

This politician trying to get points from MR by assaulting peaceful protest. UNP join with JVP should continue similar events in larger scale. People power can't be suppressed for ever. One day paid thugs get hammered. This government now living by selling the war. Again people are not stupid for ever. This will lead into Uprising like in Egypt in future. We can see what will happen to Sri Lankan Gamal.

    Alien Saturday, 05 February 2011 05:55 PM

and then get ruled by a US puppet.. Wait and see what will happen to Egypt. Egypt will be controlled by the west soon.

    Ayomi D Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:51 AM

Let's rise up like the Egyptians

    Alien Saturday, 05 February 2011 06:04 PM

Thank you Roshan. People don't see this. I'm also waiting to see Egyptians get ruled by a US puppet.

Keerthi Wijebahu Saturday, 05 February 2011 06:08 PM

Why next time? UNP has a long history of introducing and using these things including "parala ena" and burning tires etc ....etc.

    DHA Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:50 AM

Mr. Karu almost everyone knows who's behind who.....I think ours is the only country where people ever do picketing on a Independence day this shows how much u'll love this country....very sad......

    Thambi Saturday, 05 February 2011 08:53 AM

What can you expect as for Sri Lankans rioting is in the blood. History speks for itself.

RATNAM KAY Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:06 AM

all these guys should go on leave for one year and study how other countries are managed. simple and beautiful how beautiful it is.............. these guys are totaly caught up in the wed of nagativity both ruling and opposition.

Said Hussein Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:12 AM

For Sri Lanka to be truely democratic we need the UNP, JVP and all others who would like to support them to get the people around to make "people's power 2011" . This would be the best thing to change the government. This has to be done now and not later. Explain what is freedom and what is needed for basic life for the poor people. Let us rally everyone together if we need to change the government.

    Said Hussein
    London

    Thomas Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:23 AM

Don't worry about coward's action , GO AHEAD & save Democracy & OUR SF

    malkanthi Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:28 AM

Most people are far more prone to let the bad experiences shape their views than the good ones.

    Ranjith Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:30 AM

Never in history to this extent. Unfolding events since just before 2005 elections, shows that we are a Pariah State

    Ranjith Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:30 AM

You seems to be one of the thugs who attacked

    Ranjith Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:36 AM

There will not be a country that we loved, in place will be another Myanmar

JUNIOR CITIZEN Saturday, 05 February 2011 06:49 PM

Silva , when will you come to protest on streets. this is not Egypt

    HM Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:37 AM

Wimalasiri, pls do not just throw words man. Think you lived out of SL for last 30 years. Now ppl can at least sleep well at homes. Our children are safe and protected. Many developments are taking place around the country. Pls open youe eyes and see, our share market is the best performing market in the world. Have you seen how our GDP has grown. Pls man, before open ur mouth, think wht you gonna talk.

JUNIOR CITIZEN Saturday, 05 February 2011 06:51 PM

and there are two factions in UNP, even JVP ARE AGAINST unp DEMONSTRATING FOR SF . THIS IS NOT GOVT ATTACK

Pain in the neck Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:40 AM

If the politico is known--for sure, really known--then the people involved in being attacked should march down to the police station and file a complaint against that person.

    Fairose Saturday, 05 February 2011 09:53 AM

    Your pocket is full?

    malkanthi Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:02 AM

@ HM you know the main problem with leaders in our country is that they mistake been Appointed instead think they've been Anointed. So people like you worship them!

gam Wanni Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:24 AM

how come the only people who led protests on independence day were the LTTE and UNP???

    Roshan Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:22 AM

I'm amazed to see how ppl in SL - wants to somehow get the party they love into power even if it means putting SL into a crisis like in Egypt. Get a life ppl - If UNP comes they won't def. not make your salaries grow or reduce the cost of living. Maybe they'd sell few public organizations. The way country is going now is the best for the last 20-30 years.

    Dilip Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:23 AM

The U.N.P and the J.V.P. always says that they know the culprits behind every problem but they never come out with names.Verry funny .Just like the lanka E.news web site.If you know the truth come out and prove it,then the public will be behind you.If you do not know just shut up insted of creating dought in our minds.
    Dilip.

    Nuwanda Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:28 AM

There are millions of poor people suffering due to floods and bad weather. It is vital all should get together and let a helping hand to them at this moment. This is not the time for any responsible party or organization to have thovil & circus on road. It adds insult to injury when these "Bahubootha" events are done on independence day of the nation.

    shan Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:27 AM

Next time you shilud take knife byclle chain.....etc. with you

    Bonda Saturday, 05 February 2011 10:33 AM

How do you know that the politicians are behind it? Have you investigated. first find out the facts and then go for legal redress. This shows that the opposition is not really organized.

    Lankan Saturday, 05 February 2011 11:18 AM

We are in a top of a volcano.....any time it could irrupt and ashes will fall on all over sri lanka

    Minister Saturday, 05 February 2011 11:26 AM
