Parliament sittings suspended

Parliament sittings were suspended a short while ago after the government opposed the adjournment debate proposed by TNA leader R. Sampanthan regarding the land issue in the north.

The government said the issue could not be debated since there was a pending court case.

Deputy Speaker ChandimaWeerakkody suspended sittings and called for a party leaders meeting to discuss if the debate could proceed.

The land powers are already in the Constitution. The constitution needs to be implemented without any discrimination. The constitution guarantees equality.

Consent of the people does not mean that majority can decide what minority wants. The northern areas are historically tamil speaking areas and the Jaffna Tamils are a distinctive indegenous population with roots in the north. Thus they have the right to administrate their own areas according to their culture and future. Would you be happy if a gang of Jaffna Tamils are manning police stations and administrating areas in sinhalese areas down south like Galle, Matara and even Hambantota?

Well done TNA. Don't rest until you get those land and police power according to the 13A. As possible, involve the international community when SL government does not give those power. Upcoming common wealth will be the best place to bring this issue.

India has not separated into various countries because the States had Police and land powers. Even in England Police are under the county councils.

If Sri Lanka needs to be remained as an undivided country then the land and police should not be vested upon Northern Provincial Council.
