Police driver remanded

The police driver who drove the jeep providing security to IGP Mahinda Balasuriya’s wife, Mrs. Asha Balasuriya and knocked down a motorcyclist in the Sannasgama area in Pelmadulla was arrested. He was later produced in Courts and was remanded till March 7.

The arrest had been made following a large protest by residents in the Sannasgama area during the past two days. The motorcyclist died on the spot when the jeep knocked him down and crashed into a nearby shop on Sunday evening.

Five others including the driver of the jeep were injured and admitted to the Ratnapura General Hospital. Three of the injured were policemen who traveled in the jeep. (Supun Dias and Lasantha Perera)
