Dog lovers are advised to carry a bag to collect the feces of the animals as the police can file a case against any dog owner on the basis that the animal polluted the environment, the police said.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said that although Sri Lanka does not have a law unlike in other countries that pet owners should carry a bag to collect their feces,  police can still file a case against such individuals for polluting the environment.

He also said that persons in the neighbourhood too can complain to the police if dogs are taken for walks by their owners and  they  defecate in front of their gates or premises.

The main objective of setting up police environment protection units is to combat the pollution of the environment, he said. According to the police, protecting the environment was not the responsibility of the government alone. The bigger responsibility lies with the public to keep their household environment clean and tidy which was the key to protect the environment at national level.

The police have set up 143 environment protection units islandwide to arrest such individuals and to combat the pollution of the environment in every police division. (Supun Dias)

what about the stary dogs..They are all over, worse is the Nugegoda town. Pehaphs the Kotte Municipal council should send its elected members to collect the droppings.

    Good idea !

This is the law in USA & Canada as well and it is tightly enforced by all major cities/municipilities. I believe it is atleast a $100 (probably more) fine for not cleaning up after your pet.

How many Sri Lankans can afford to buy imported bags of dog food? They can barely afford to buy chicken for the family.

    S Bandara Friday, 04 November 2011 08:41 AM

Should be a high priority because nobody to carry bags for those stray dogs.

    idiot Friday, 04 November 2011 08:27 AM

    Elizabeth Friday, 04 November 2011 07:02 AM

There are people chewing bulath and spitting from vehicles, buses and cars, while waling on the streets they spit all over, these people definitely have to fined by the police

    Elizabeth Friday, 04 November 2011 07:01 AM

Men are seen all over the streets urinating, which is a shame to look at, they too have to carry a potty with them instead of watering the public walls and trees or the police should fine them

Imran Hussein Friday, 04 November 2011 06:56 AM

Yes please do something and band clearings in public loudly.

    Wara Friday, 04 November 2011 06:15 AM

    chinthaka Friday, 04 November 2011 05:36 AM

You are very correct Mr.Wahid.I am with you.

    chinthaka Friday, 04 November 2011 05:31 AM

Very good, but who will collect the poo of stray dogs.So get rid of these stray dogs, who become a menace to the society.(Kill them & don't waste public money to make orphanages & feed them, because we are already spending so much money on rabies injections which are very costly.)

Oyage sudu kella Friday, 04 November 2011 05:19 AM

Good move. Pls do something about spitting, too. Thanks.

How about the Human urinating in public places? Can the police fine them too?

    Citizen Friday, 04 November 2011 03:59 AM

very good move. While making it compulsory the dog owners can be given the option to carry a 'potty' with them, depending on their status, when they walk their dogs!

    Dee Friday, 04 November 2011 03:47 AM

who will have to carry bags for all the street pooches?

    Shanaz Friday, 04 November 2011 03:38 AM

    Superb idia..

    Sanchu Friday, 04 November 2011 03:32 AM

Good Move. But do something for stray dogs also.

Asarana Kolla Friday, 04 November 2011 02:10 AM

Meanwhile please catch all stray dogs in all streets & have a dogs orphanage. If public needs pups or dogs they can buy for money from here too, and also should implement dogs tags/license too. Even for cats. There are many of them if you go to streets. Many of these pets get accidents to vehicles and create big damages to public. Please looking to these suggestions.

    bhumi Friday, 04 November 2011 02:00 AM

    Excellent idea

Abdul Wahid Friday, 04 November 2011 01:51 AM

Well, very good move to protect the enviornment as well as the step to bring this Colombo is one of the beautiful city how ever how about the stray dogs feces, who should collect theirs, not only vihara maha park, beaches (Gall Face), ever corner of Colombo, those creature troubling the public, shoul find the solution working to eradicate rabies and control the street-dog population in a humane, scientific way.

    Problems caused by stray dogs
Rabies–a fatal disease which can be transmitted to humans. Although all warm-blooded animals can get and transmit rabies, dogs are the most common carrier.

Dog bites-Most occur when dogs are trying to mate and fighting among themselves–pedestrians and other humans in the vicinity often get bitten accidentally. Females with pups to protect may also be aggressive and bite people who approach their litter.

Barking and howling–an accompaniment to dog fights which invariably take place over mating.

LOVE LANKA Friday, 04 November 2011 01:42 AM

Nice Idea. Actually, in Japan, you can see every person who takes their pet(s) for a walk, carrying bags to collect their pet's feces. Sri Lankans also should take care of thier own living environment - "to make it better place for YOU and me!"

    azath Friday, 04 November 2011 01:25 AM

This is a very good move.

    V. Puran Appu Friday, 04 November 2011 12:30 AM

    Good move.

Silly Cecille Thursday, 03 November 2011 10:38 PM
