People losing faith in institutions: UNP

The main opposition UNP today said the dangerous trend of people rising against the police is a result of people losing their faith on such institutions as they have become politicised.

UNP MP Gayantha Karunatilleke who referred to the killing of a police officer in Moratuwa and the recent incidents in Dompe said such incidents are signs of a dangerous trend which had risen as a result of those institutions losing their independent status.

Mr. Karunatillke said the police had lost its reputation because of the way it dealt with certain incidents. He said the police today are forced to act as spectators when hooligans of several influential people go into action. The UNP MP recalled that this was exactly what happened on Independence Day when the UNP staged a protest in Colombo calling for the release of jailed former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka as a group of thugs who happened to be henchmen of a government politician attacked several MPs.

“The Country would go into anarchy if an independent police service is not established as soon as possible,” he said.

He said there was a failure on the part of the government to take action against police officers who use violence on people who come out against injustice. Mr. Karunatilleke said this was the case with the incident at the Katunayake Free Trade zone which had been swept under the carpet. (Yohan Perera)

police dept. is always a puppet dancing to the others tune, we never trusted them, but the security forces yes always straight and clean???
