The four opposition members of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) probing the charges against the Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake, are seriously considering withdrawal from the process, Daily Mirror learns.

The four opposition members of the PSC are considering withdrawal because they believe that principles of natural justice cannot be applied in probing charges against the Chief Justice, Daily Mirror learns.

UNP MP Lakshman Kiriella, Chief Opposition Whip John Amaratunga, JVP MP MP Vijitha Herath and TNA leader R. Sampanthan are the four opposition members of the PSC.

It is learnt that they are currently having discussions whether to withdraw from the PSC or not.

The main opposition UNP, in particular believes that Sri Lanka has accepted Latimer House or Commonwealth principles that set out relationship between Parliament, the Executive and the Judiciary of the member states, UNP sources said.

Therefore, the party believes that the government should stick to these principles in conducting inquiries against the Chief Justice. The Association of District Judges and Magistrates also made a similar request to the government a few days ago. (Kelum Bandara)

The question is not whether Shiranee.B should be impeached, as a Chief Justice- but the sad fate is whether the Parliament which is non-durable, can act as a court house. ?
In no way they can do so- as they have no qualifications.
    Amen

Where was natural justice when Shirani purchased nadu bhanda?

    Realist Thursday, 06 December 2012 08:59 AM

How can CJ and her supportes decry denial of natural justice when she is doing the same; ineffect hearing her own case when appointing judges to benches to hear cases impigning on the impeachment like interpretation of article 107 of the constitution and later BASL petition on violation of fundamental rights ?

what is sauce for goose is sauce for gander as well

Welcome sign of the the PSC crashing in the immediate future.

    C. Seneveratne Thursday, 06 December 2012 07:52 AM

Natural justice is a dirty word in this land now. The role of the opposition is to fight
    against it united.

Imran Hussein Thursday, 06 December 2012 07:07 AM

A very unfair unbalanced Select Committee. Opposition should have boycotted in the begining itself.

    Fernando, k. Thursday, 06 December 2012 07:04 AM

The govt will have its own way in this case also like in the past several acts including the one that brutally ended the war with no feeling for thousands of civilians. Everyone just said 'go.. go...go..' The govt is now encouraged by this and does everything in its way! We can only just sit and watch.

    SHALANI Thursday, 06 December 2012 06:55 AM

decision of the opposition appears to be correct....because there is no point in wasting time by fighting in a loosing battle!

Damma Deepa Thursday, 06 December 2012 06:36 AM

" Surely our citizens as well as the entire world body will really understand what type of Supreme Court and Parliament are existing in this country. It is very sad state of affairs are happening among the representatives of the People. What is happening in Damma Deepa is very very sad and we do not have future suerly

Think carefully guys. How you act will decide whether you will be forgotten by history as typical politicians or the get your names in the books as heroes (or villains).

    Ryan Thursday, 06 December 2012 04:25 AM

This news itself is a lie, even if it is true it wont stop the process. Association of judges news is also a lie. Nothing like that happened. It is just DM fabricates news.

    aroosh Thursday, 06 December 2012 04:19 AM

this is jungle governing so don't expect good trhings

Real Peace Thursday, 06 December 2012 04:14 AM

Not unexpected! But this can trigger many serious ramifications in the country if the govt carries on with the PSC. Watch this space.....

    sbd Thursday, 06 December 2012 04:16 AM

Not only they should quit but also issue an statement to the effect that they can not be party to violate natural justice in a mock inquiry.
Otherwise this sin will follow them too as the cart follows the Ox, right thru their life. This will haunt them in their death bed.

    Ralahamy Thursday, 06 December 2012 04:09 AM

did anyone believe that principles of natural justice will be followed with CJ or anyone that goes against the regime?

    Is this a new item?
