The Department of Elections is to Gazett re-polling in the Nawalapitiya electorate where there were several incidents and the all island results will not be released till the repoll is carried out, an official at the Department of Elections said.
The official meanwhile told Daily Mirror online that overall the polls were free and fair and stern action was taken in areas where there were reports of malpractices and violence.
However election observers ruled out the polls from being free and fair and said several incidents of election related incidents had been reported from Vavuniya, Trincomalee and Nawalapitiya. "We cannot say the polls were free and fair. We have informed this to the Elections Commissioner when we met him early morning today," PAFFREL Executive Director Rohana Hettiarachchi said.
