Education Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam today ordered that a fresh investigation be launched into allegations made against Ananda College Principal Kithsiri Liyanagamage that he had violated ministry circulars on grade-1 admissions.

He also confirmed that Royal College Principal Upali Gunasekera had been transferred to the Education Ministry pending an investigation.

Several complaints had been received that a large number of grade one applicants who were admitted to Ananda College were not from Colombo or the suburbs.

One of the complaints was that children with adequate qualifications including the distance between home and school have been disregarded by the principal.
Meanwhile, the minister said a new principal had not yet been appointed to Royal College though there are rumours that Thurstan College Principal B.A. Abeyratne might be appointed as the new Principal of Royal College. (Piyumi Fonseka)

Education Department is the most corrupt institution in Srilanka. This investigation should be handled by the Bribery Commission.

Education minister should check there is something wrong somewhere in our education system. Government is allocating lot of funds for the education sector. Teachers demand for more benefits. End of the day students depend on tuition to pass the exam. This has become a big burden for the parents. Children start tuition from grade one onwards till A/L. There is no leisure time for children. Even during school holidays tuition teachers have classes. Finally some children are so tired of the race they end up with poor results.

When my first baby boy borne at a private hospital in SL, somebody came and knocked the door after knowing my position in SL. He told me that give him LKR 1 million now and He will be assured the school entrance of popular school in Colombo. However I didn't interest and I dont want to give any .... for my sons education as bribe and I dont want him to act as liar. Therefore I migrated to give him a good education in corruption free culture

It is a shame school principals of Sri lanka are corrupted as much as politicians are. Every one in this country new about this several years this situation. It is about time to change this education culture. Sri Lanka has the highest no: of children in the world who go to tuition schools after attending the regular school. That says there is something wrong with education system in Sri Lanka.

Minister has to find short term and long term approach to upgrade the under performing school in suburbs. Then automatically demand for the popular school will decline. Without doing that he is going behind principals. The way that ministers approach is to appoint their henchmen to popular schools.

We used to greatly "respect" and "look up to" our principals in the good old days...what a shame that even they are corrupted. Sadden for the children of our country.

Possibly Ministers catchers were not able to get their children in - in spite of a word put in by the Minister. Investigate this aspect as well.

Every principal after our dearest Col. Kudaligama, ruined the the great school

    wick Wednesday, 13 January 2016 01:44 AM

Ananada,Nalanda are National Schools and grade 1 admission should not to be limited to Colombo people.A criteria to be developed giving opportunities for other areas.

Can this s.o.b read and write as a minister?

    Sincere Wednesday, 13 January 2016 12:30 AM

Some effective measures have to be taken against principles in big schools in Colombo if they continue to violate the rules and regulations which the previous regime ignored about.

it is a well know fact the education in sri lanka is not free. from the fpre school ALs. It is also a well know fact that in order to get igehr marks in the grade five, OLs and ALs that student shuold attend to private tutions. So it is timely now to birng a new poliy to change this as it has alredy in a crazy trend

    SL Tuesday, 12 January 2016 07:52 PM

Find a solution to upgrade the low performing school to high performing schools .then parents would not pay high price to get the admission into colleges like Ananda,Nalanda or Royal. As a parent I too would love to send my kids to Ananda Nalanda,Dharmaraja Royal or ,does not matter where I am living in because there are only few good schools across the country performing well in Education
