Construction work on the Northern Expressway will be launched tomorrow by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Highways Project Minister Nirmala Kotalawala said yesterday.
The project was initiated following requests from the people of Kandy and it was initially named as the Colombo – Kandy Expressway.
However, the President had later directed that the expressway be extended to cover the Northern, North- Central and the Eastern-Provinces as well, the minister said.
He saidseveral ceremonies have been organised at the interchanges of the expressway in Kurunegala, Galagedara and Rambukkana.
“The construction will be carried outby local engineers with the help of local constructors. We hope to complete the project within four years,” the minister said. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
