Internally Displaced People (IDP) of Manik Farm in Vavuniya waiting to travel to Jaffna to cast their votes this morning could not go to cast their vote since the buses deployed on the route had mysteriously gone missing, JVP MP Vijitha Herath told Daily Mirror online.

“The government’s plan is to prevent the voters from casting their vote,” Herath claimed. According to him these IDP’s had been assured transportl by the government and they had been ready and waiting for the buses only to be disappointed.

MP Herath was on his way to Manik Farm when he was detained by the police at a check point. He said that he was on his way to address the voter grievances and solve the transportation issue.

Meanwhile the Centre for Election Monitoring (CMEV) Spokesperson Dr. Pakiasothy Saravanamuttu said that there was an attempt to disrupt free and fair polls in the North. “There is some kind of organized attempt to disrupt the polls in the North to ensure a low voter turnout,” he said.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:07 AM

Ha! ha! what a joke, any other rabbits in the magic bag? Common can someone act fast, before we loose?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:07 AM

IS THIS THE DEMOCRACY MR HAS BEEN YAPPING ON ABOUT????? ABSOLUTELY DESPICABLE. they're OUR people, they have every RIGHT to vote!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:11 AM

No wonder as why those Jaffna people took arms. We are at the verge of encouraging yet another ethnic conflict in this country. An ethnicity that suffered for the last 30 years and even after the eradication of terrorism, those civilian are yet to enjoy the true democracy in this country.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:17 AM

We had been living in a hell for past 30 years because minority had tried to take majority for a ransom to gain more power. It is up to you guys to decide whether we should support a united Sri Lanka and create opportunities for everyone. Not empty promises which will send us back another 30 years to past!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:19 AM

How can you call this as fair and free election when these Tamils cannot vote. The Election Commissioner should call for fresh election in North and until then the final result should not be declared. This is the mistake the Election Commissioner did in the last Election.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:21 AM

Now where is Phillayan, Dugalas and the gang talking of tamil rights?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:21 AM

What can they expect from the government of MR in the future?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:22 AM

Anurudda Then Why Did MR go to hambanthota ? he should have gone to polling station In colombo 3 isnt it

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:23 AM

This is depriving the basic human rights of these people!
Last time the LTTE stopped them from voting and paid the price, this time its the government who's trying to play around they too will pay the price!!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:03 AM

These kinds of actions will Sri Lnnkans, create another LTTE soon. please open your eyes.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:48 AM

Don't worry,,as always,,government will cast IDP votes by themselves on behalf of all the IDP's,,this is a special service available only in sri lanka,,Thanks thanks. IDP can stay at their homes & watch the result on TV,,,what a Government we have,,,One & only in the world,,,,,

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:54 AM

LTTE would have been better off without Praba. At least the tamils would have had a much better political wing to back them up. My heart goes out to those in the IDP camps.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:56 AM

Last election Praba stopped them from voting...this election its MR...!!!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:59 AM

SF:- Pls arrange tranport immediately.....appoint a team there and help the poeple to vote without any delay.....we should see a grand victory from your side SF....

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 07:01 AM

What nonsense.. !! Wait for the results tomorrow.. We will hear a 90% voter turnout in the NE.. thanks to Free and Fair Elections (Chintana Model).

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 07:23 AM

Ugly democracy. where is rule of law and it is surly the MR's rule by law

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 10:56 AM

Congratulations!!!!! President Fonseka for wining the elections against all odds

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 11:34 AM

The poor and the minorities cannot expect anything from MR & co. Please keep this in mind. We all hope for a change of Presidency and change of government soon.

    Said Hussein - UK

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:03 PM

My sympathies on them no matter for whom they decided to vote, their rights have been unfairly taken away. At least hope their lives will improve be it MR or SF coming into the seat.... May God be with Sri Lanka.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:39 AM

Now the sinhalese are concerned. Because it involves them too!!! Otherwise they would have just ignored and said the Tamils always complain for no reason!!!!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:25 AM

    SHAME ..SHAME.. ON YOU SRILANKA.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:26 AM

oh! Vijitha the great speaks!!! We think twice before believing what you say after the silly explanation made by you saying that the govt induced the letter from the UN. :P

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:26 AM

    Totally is.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:28 AM

What else do you expect from a gangland government. they have stooped to such tactics to make sure the clan is back in power to rob the Srilankan.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:30 AM

where are Gota and Basil today - may be remote organizing..........

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:31 AM

So so first try to transfew Lewke out of the North, then hold up herath (not that thats such a bad thing! but in today's context its a bit blatant...hehe) and thats only what we're hearing so far.....
    should be a fun night.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:32 AM

This is what the Tamils have been complaining about for decades. When these kind of things happen to us, we stand and shout. No one can rule without us Sinhalease so we are largely protected but unfortunately when these things happen to the minorities, we keep quiet. So their voices never get heard in this democracy. Much of this mess is our fault, we should stop blaming them and take responsibility too.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:35 AM

This has far reaching adverse effects on democracy. It is pushing democracy loving citizens back to the jungles and inviting to take guns.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:37 AM

I think there is no humanity left in this world anymore.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:39 AM

I am sure MR is going to win with the help and might of India. MR's strategy is not plotted in Colombo but in Delhi. Only SF and RW think they would even come close to MR's votes. Gotabaya will ensure victory somehow for MR. Anyone want to guess how?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:23 AM

Another pathetic below the belt attempt to rob the election by this regime which is struggling for oxygen.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:40 AM

Is this the democracy of MR?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:41 AM

Those who are about to be destroyed are first made insane

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:41 AM

    To : Gen SF Office...

Still there is time, hire some buses and get them to the polling stations... Every vote counts...

    We want a grand victory.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:42 AM

Common this is really bad...!!!...already these ppl are going through hell in the camps the its still continuing to do so....this is really bad...common MR where r u ? help these ppl...!!!

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:42 AM

Quite a few in the Big Cities are unable to vote too

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:44 AM

Actually, their is no humanity left in Sri Lanka. The behaviour of citizens and their leaders in other countries are exemplary to what we assume and practice as Buddhists.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:46 AM

Same on Vijitha. They don't want to got Jaffna for voting. There are polling stations for IDPs set at Menik farm itself.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 05:47 AM

    mokada bus nethda?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 06:02 AM

MR calls election 2 years ahead of time, saying he wants to give northern voters a chance to exercise their franchise. Why is his govt. machinery now denying these same voters this opportunity? What a waste of money! We will be paying even higher taxes after the election to fund this colossal blunder.
