No rush to seek Nirvana - Mervyn

Minister Mervyn Silva said he was not in a big hurry to die and seek Nirvana immediately. Addressing a meeting at Parawahagama in the Kekirawa electorate to mark the unveiling of a statue of the heroic Weera Keppetiopola Nilame, the Minister said, “Every day I go to bed after listening to Pirith.Therefore if I die in my sleep I would pluck flowers with an angel.
I can’t seek Nirvana in a rush because it would lessen my joyful period. I want to die with the angels putting my hands over their shoulders. Because of my friends I have to break one of the precepts.
I drink only a little red wine. When I go to heaven they will question me whether I have I drunk and they would to try to pour some hot liquid metal into my mouth. The Angels will ask where my teeth are. The mere consumption of liquor will not compel a man to kill a person, steal or indulge in adultery.”
He also said “Dear Nilame Weera Keppetiopola, I must have been with you when you came to this village and handed over your designations, swords and others back to the Englishmen. And if I was their when the textile trader tipped off the British about you, I would have stripped and hung him on a tree.” (Karunaratne Dissanayake - Kekirawa)
