Postponing the leadership training program scheduled to commence on May 23 would be a waste of public finances, Higher Education Ministry Secretary Dr. Sunil Jayantha Nawaratne today told Daily Mirror Online.

“We have already spent Rs. 90 million for the training program and we have vacated and reserved the training camps for the scheduled three weeks. If we postpone the program it would be a waste of public money and our efforts,” Dr. Nawaratne said adding that another sum of Rs. 90 million is due to be allocated for the program.

Commenting on the speculation of contempt of court that could result through not postponing the training program, Dr. Nawaratne said that they have been advised by the Attorney General to proceed with the scheduled programs since it would not result in a contempt of court. (Lakna Paranamanna)

Leadership training NOT CONDUCTED in Military Camps, but in the Universcities and at the SLAS . This is is a bogus traing.

Most writers do not know who AG is & what roll he plays in the administration of Justice. Paying high salaries to academics in Lieu of training students, will not help students to have a peaceful & fruitful 3 to 4 years of university life. Strong & united student body should be established to hit the murderous JVP, like what was done with the LTTE.

Spend this money on research and development, or infrastructure development of the universities

Calistus Jayatilleke Sunday, 22 May 2011 03:27 AM

The Court asked the AG to "consider" postponing. So, the AG has given his "considered" opinion to proceed. Simple as that!

Mr Punctilious Saturday, 21 May 2011 05:58 PM

The money would be better spent on university infrastructure and salaries for the teaching staff.

    cj Saturday, 21 May 2011 01:02 PM

Hmmm Utter waste of public money. We could have conducted 90 odd research projects each worth of 1 million rupees

    Dr.Herath Saturday, 21 May 2011 11:55 AM

Dr.Navarathne, we know who you are and your ambitions are. Please leave students alone. Please provide them with hostels, better pay for the academics and other staff, develop guidelines for the development of higher education for next decade and empower relevant people.I know you wont do that because you do not have that capacity.
    cheers

Amal Perera Saturday, 21 May 2011 11:51 AM

Everyone is above the law it seems. We don't want any law-enforcing authorities in this Banana Republic

We have spent...... well who asked you to spend? 90m, hmm all are super jumbo big time dealings? Wonder what actually students would learn in a weeks time.
