The prime objective at the moment of the SLFP lead UPFA government is to convince the Tamil, Muslim and other communities that they are not minorities and that Sri Lanka is one unified nation President Mahinda Rajapaksa said today.

Addressing the 60th anniversary of the SLFP, at Temple Trees President Rajapaksa further said that the government was never obliged to give ransoms or a part of the country to anyone to achieve the concept of one nation. He added that the SLFP is strong enough to not fall prey to separatist elements that try to raise their ugly heads once again.  (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

Does that mean the monorities will be sinhalised, and all their lands and rights will be taken over by sinhalese, and they will will be wiped out or forced to leave therefore there will be no more minorities.......whats world are u living , to declare that there ar e no minorities, and that they have a disntinct identity......bring back communisim , and change school curruculim first......

    Mohan Saturday, 03 September 2011 05:52 AM

At this rate there will only be one family , leave alone minority. New emergency law is so scary that i could end up in jail for treason & perhaps shot.

    karu Saturday, 03 September 2011 06:17 AM

took 40 years to say it

    yohar Saturday, 03 September 2011 07:40 AM

The minorities problem since 1948, has been not resolved for
over 60 years. It has now seen the light of day with the minorities
being gradually encapsulated by the sources in power all in the name of democracy. The minorities are made to disappear by a
process of MILITARY MIGHT in the whole country, NOT AN EASY TASK THOUGH. The whole of the international community is aware of the happenings and will have all the replies due, sooner than later by way of Libyan style, democratic
    opposition.

    Yahiya-Doha Saturday, 03 September 2011 09:30 AM

    We seen through Greese devil.

    citizen Saturday, 03 September 2011 09:41 AM

Mr. President those are golden words.
Keep it up Sir. All should live as SRILANKANS.

marcus fernando Saturday, 03 September 2011 10:26 AM

will the cake be shared squarely? just uttering is of no use

    Mohamed Saturday, 03 September 2011 10:33 AM

action speaks louder than words. Appoint a Prim Minister from Minority like India did for their presidency.

    Godaya Saturday, 03 September 2011 10:58 AM

Will he accept a Tamil or Muslim as his Prime Minister or Speaker? Such talks don't mean anything to the minorities.

Johann Gunasekara Saturday, 03 September 2011 11:21 AM

A great statement and he is capable of implementing it, perhaps the biggest issue is one of language, and the right to communicate in one's mother tounge, particularly with govt depts, police and judiciary.

The minorities on the other hand must see themselves first as Sri Lankans and send a clear message to Tamil Nadu and the Ethnic Diaspora that they wan't lasting peace under one flag

A step in the right direction is to have one verse of the national anthem in Tamil, some great examples are NZ and SA

smart thinker Saturday, 03 September 2011 11:24 AM

Best thing to confirm it with, Take out Religion column from All applications. If you are genuine.

Calistus Jayatilleke Saturday, 03 September 2011 11:43 AM

We have heard it before! But just repeating this mantra, one cannot expect all the problems to vanish. When Indira Gandhi used an election slogan to say "No more poor", the poor people panicked that she was going to eliminate them and voted against her that time!

    lal Saturday, 03 September 2011 12:10 PM

The President has said that we are all Sri lankan and no minorities and no majority. Tamils should get rid of their minority complex and the mindset. SL cannot be compared to the Libyan situation as we are democracy. I guess you are bitter because the racist, murderous LTTE have been eliminated. Thats your bad luck.

    madpatriot Saturday, 03 September 2011 01:23 PM

u mean in the name of liberation?

    Deepani Saturday, 03 September 2011 02:19 PM

we need the peaceful living stand. Not the majority stand.

    faqi Sunday, 04 September 2011 07:26 PM

Gamarala - Why talk of Kadiragamar as PM when the SLFP never even temporarily appointed their most senior politician C.P. De Siva to be even acting PM as he was not of the Govigama caste, on several occasions Maithripala Senanayake was appointed acting PM but never C.P. De Siva who should have been the SLFP nominee for PM, but he was never allowed due to his caste. He had every qualification to be PM.

    Sharfan Saturday, 03 September 2011 03:19 PM

Sir I am a Sri Lankan Muslim. Our community respects you and we salute you for the services done to Sri Lanka. But Please put your words to action. We should live as one family in one country

    GSK Saturday, 03 September 2011 03:43 PM

    Thank you Mr. President !!

    pissu Saturday, 03 September 2011 03:48 PM

Just that easy for him to say. Who is he hoodwinking? For reality, go to North and East and have a look around.

    ila Saturday, 03 September 2011 05:08 PM

Sir, are you trying to impose one man's opinion on others. Have a referrundum among minorities to find out what they think.

    foolsarealwaysfools Saturday, 03 September 2011 05:16 PM

Is it? Can a citizen of Srilanka can compete on a presidential election regardless of their religion?

Equality is the reason people like to live abroad, eventhough they love to stay home where they grew up.

    mawbima Saturday, 03 September 2011 05:38 PM

If so, why Tamils & Muslims are still not allowed to own & run a coomercial business in well known areas like KIRIBATHGODA, RAGAMA to name a few. Dear President we need ACTIONS & not just words... Why not prove that you were really honest & true in what you said..

nawala nihal Saturday, 03 September 2011 05:54 PM

how come mahinda say that there are no minorities...this country is not belongs to rajapakse family alone...definitely there are minorities...sinhala buddhists are the majority...but all must understand to live peacefully without being a pray to any political party...we all should stand as one nation...but remember there are minority and a mojority...but all must share equal rights...

    faqi Saturday, 03 September 2011 08:01 PM

What is wrong in everyone living in Sri Lanka being classed and called Sri Lankan's? Take a look at the USA, they all collectively call themselves Americans. Though there are many minority groups living in the USA. That is the strength of the USA, so why can't we be all Sri Lankan's first as the President says under one flag? Ethnic divisions always cause trouble, a good example are Balkan countries, forever fighting over ethnicity.

    ishi Friday, 02 September 2011 04:22 PM

He is not second to Obama when it comes to speech, but when it comes to implementation???????????

    RAJU Saturday, 03 September 2011 09:30 PM

RUBBISH, THIS IS ANOTHER TECHNIC TO EASE THE PRESENT PRESSURE FROM THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY.

    Mike Saturday, 03 September 2011 10:24 PM

We r all Sri lankans .....though we sinhala, tamil, burger, we were all born in this small country.....we may not stand or belive in everthing we do....but whre ever u in the world and if anybody ask who u are ? Their not bothered u r sinhala, tamil, they only want to witch country you r from ? WE R ALL SRi LANKANS..

grease yaka Saturday, 03 September 2011 10:53 PM

First of all ban rascist political parties, JHU.SIHALA URUMAYA,MUSLIM CONGRESS.
Ban hate speech ,and treat all srilankans equally with dignity and get rid of patali ranawaka ,meepala herath and pass new legislations in parliment to protect the civil rights and freedom of speech of every srilankans born in srilanka.and all govt funded public schools to enroll tamils ,muslims and other ethnic srilankans equally to "buddhist " schools without any discriminations and prejudice.

Punchi Putha Friday, 02 September 2011 04:34 PM

Very true, after a couple of years there will be no more.

    Ananda Sunday, 04 September 2011 02:04 AM

Minorities also should behave and act like SRi LANKANS. If they feel jealous, spread hatred, discrimanatory and spred violence against Sinhalese and Sri Lanka, you are asking for troubles again. So whatever hatred you have in your blood and mind, "kill" it and behave like SRI LANKANS, Long live our President Rajapakse and his family!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Ananda Sunday, 04 September 2011 02:06 AM

professorabdulmajeed: NO MORON, that means you will eb treated as same as any other Sri Lankan like we did for more than 2000 years.. So stop being a jerk and hating Sinhalese.

    veluppilai Sunday, 04 September 2011 02:39 AM

The basic law is that a Unitary constitution is applicable only if there is only one nation and if there is only one language.
In a country where two nations with two distinct languages
your theory is not applicable. This is the accepted international
basic law in drafting constitutions and if you are unable to comprehend this basic law you are not fit to be a head of state
and you are playing politics for the gallery. Please be honest and try to be a statesman at least in your old age.

    Sammy Sunday, 04 September 2011 02:54 AM

Practice is more important than precept. It is one thing to make these statements and another thing to make an effort to change perspectives. A "Sri Lankan" identity is not being promoted sincerely.

    indra Sunday, 04 September 2011 03:42 AM

This should be in action from the bottom of your heart and should be implemented without any impartialicity. Then why all the notice boardin the village locations are in singalese in the first place in the tamil speaking areas. It should be in tamil. No more there was and you and your bro had got rid of them

    janaka Sunday, 04 September 2011 04:49 AM

    Only words. Yes.

Imran Hussein Sunday, 04 September 2011 05:48 AM

    Absolutey.
    Smart challenge Smart thinker.

    baila Sunday, 04 September 2011 05:49 AM

so no more white vans or grease devils?

Fazeen MZM Friday, 02 September 2011 07:05 PM

Well, will support for Srilanka to become one unified nation

    SLboy Friday, 02 September 2011 08:05 PM

Means, no more Tamil and Muslims in Sri Lanka.

    Guru Friday, 02 September 2011 09:16 PM

Rubbish. Tell this to the Modayas and they might believe you.

    Sahan Friday, 02 September 2011 10:55 PM

Tamils and Tamil speaking muslims will not compromise their political aspirations for these "nice" words!Recent election in N/E have shown that!

    Gihan Friday, 02 September 2011 10:59 PM

J.R said the same about UNP in 1970's and denied political solution, result was a war for 30 years, now M.R is saying the same,BUT this time result will not be a war, something else!

ampare son Saturday, 03 September 2011 12:34 AM

thats true. we are sri lanken.

    Samecy Saturday, 03 September 2011 01:19 AM

Yeah right, that's why UPFA govt has been cleansing the minorities!

Shanil Samarakoon Sunday, 04 September 2011 07:43 AM

Very different contexts in both those examples...

    NAS Sunday, 04 September 2011 08:07 AM

This should be practice not in theory. Practically Minorities should feel that they belong to one country and one nation. what does it require it means that politicians should treat all equally and we should not have discrimination at all. Can we do it. Do this in all sections. Do it in education, employment, politics, and in all other areas. Then every one will be happy.

    madhana Saturday, 03 September 2011 01:28 AM

in other words he wants to say srilanka is not a multi ethnic country by hiding the minorities identity.

    madhana Saturday, 03 September 2011 01:36 AM

why dont he say no more majority in sri lanka ??

Sitting Bull Saturday, 03 September 2011 02:10 AM

Only traitors. Yeah we heard that one before!!!!!!

    Gamarala Sunday, 04 September 2011 08:49 AM

We know how some people reacted when Chandrika tried to appoint Mr Kadiaragamar as Prime Minister. They didn’t want to give a highest position to so called minorities. This type of talks are just hoodwinking.

    Ralahamy Saturday, 03 September 2011 02:25 AM

    Yes,heard ad nauseum.

Damien Perea Saturday, 03 September 2011 03:06 AM

Didn't the President say this before? Has it made any difference to the minorities? Nice words, Mr. President. What is needed is action on the ground. The minorities need to see words translated into action. Empty words mean nothing to the people.

    keth Saturday, 03 September 2011 03:47 AM

Yes you may be right in your words, the war ended more than 2 years ago and still the Tamil's suffering continues, in different form - the new version of fear is ' greeze devils' . You seem like living in a dream world like Pirabaharan did.

    dilhan Saturday, 03 September 2011 04:22 AM

    THEN NO POWER DEVOLUTION NEEDED

    t.shanmuganathan Saturday, 03 September 2011 04:21 AM

most appropriate statement .This must be approved by Parliment and embodied in the consitution for the etire Srilankan community to live in peace and harmony.
