Election monitors claim that some private establishments in Colombo have failed to authorize leave for their employees in order to cast their vote at the General Elections today and a complaint to this effect is going to be lodged at the Elections Department.

PAFFREL Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi told Daily Mirror online that they had received some complaints from individuals claiming that their establishments had not authorized leave and investigations were underway to identify these companies.

“We are trying to identify these companies and where it is located. Once we have the information we will lodge a complaint with the Elections Department. All employees must be given leave today to cast their votes,” Hettiarachchi said.

He added that companies in Colombo should have authorized leave for its employees from early this week as those whose voting is outstation could have made arrangements to travel to their respective home towns prior to polling day today.

He further said that it was not possible for employees to travel today as public transport was poor. (Daily Mirror online)

Hell no... The law do not say to give leave early this week. It authorizes only half day for those living in the 20KM radius, 1 day for 40 KM radius, 1.5 days for 70KM radius and 2 days for more than 70 KM radius. How can Rohana H expect us to give more than that?

This is not the first time it happened... It happened when the Presidential election took place and now it even worse. Most companies would say that you can take leave for 2 - 4 hrs of today (on the date of voting) but they will never make it in such short time. Also these companies announce this news on the day of the voting so that no one can figure out how to get it.

This is true. Many private companies have refused leave for their employees. Many are deprived of their franchise.Government must take stern actions against those private companies.
