The Government said today that the introduction of new laws which impose sanctions on individuals or entities that have links with Taliban or Al-Qaeda is a precautionary measure.  Government Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella said “The introduction of these new laws is a precautionary measure as we have to fall in line with the situation of the globe”.

When queried by the Daily Mirror as to if the government believes that elements linked to these organizations exist in Sri Lanka Rambukwella was evasive “ Prevention is better than cure and that is an accepted fact, we are following the developments in the rest of the world” he said.

Senior Minister A.H.M Fowzie speaking on the impending law said that he does not believe there is any reason to introduce such laws. “ Al Qaeda and Taliban don’t exist in Sri Lanka and that is a fact, even in the east the situation is clear to the effect that no people are affiliated to these terrorist groups.” he said.
New regulations are to be introduced to in Sri Lanka keeping inline with its obligations to the United Nations. The new regulations will impose a fine and a jail term for any individual or group aiding, financing, or having links with any of the two organizations. (Hafeel Farisz)

the Taliban does not advertise their existence so its best to take precautions and be prepared and NOT live in somebody's dream world

    Hussain Monday, 04 June 2012 09:28 AM

You seem to drink too much of "cool aid" to make such an asinine comment. Israel does not guide the USA. The USA does not need anyones guidance, they are the most powerful nation on earth. There is no other nation even in a close second.

    sandman Monday, 04 June 2012 11:16 AM

The way mosques are being targeted, it would not be surprising for young folk to think on these lines.

    krishna Monday, 04 June 2012 11:53 AM

Yes you are correct, now In Sri Lanka you have only government sponsored thuggery.

    marina Monday, 04 June 2012 12:31 PM

Why not you give their names to the Police instead of provoking ordinary Muslims with your stupid remarks.

    Hussain Monday, 04 June 2012 03:30 PM

Was this discussion not about Al Queda? How or why does Israel come into this ?

    Junta Monday, 04 June 2012 10:02 PM

yes good poin, how the hell did Israel come into this? first stop the habit of blaming Jews!

Deiyo Saakki Monday, 04 June 2012 10:36 PM

Never mind never mind, tell us about your planned lawsuit will you. That was more entertaining and informative.

    Mr. B Wijeyasingha Monday, 04 June 2012 10:46 PM

Of course the possibility is strong. I remember reading an article when the Civil war was in full force that the Al-Qaeda and Islamic terrorist groups in Pakistan and India had made contact with LITE and the Tamil Tigers to teach them the guerrilla tactics that the Tamil Tigers were well known. If that connection existed at that time then the connection may still be in place. With the recent issue in Dambulla and the rise of TESO I have no doubt that a second try at Eelam will include the support of the Al-Qaeda.

Leader of Al-qaide and Taiban is USA

    # Marzook Tuesday, 05 June 2012 02:57 AM

Now I agree with Asoka. Well said. There should not be any space to any type of extremist. Although I am a muslim I believe some of act like we are from a different planet. My view on how women are treated is also not positive. They have to have much more freedom. Like in other religions. Just because Arabians wore a fully covered cloth to safeguard from sand storms doesnt mean the sri lankan muslim women have to cover all of their body. Some groups force these on women. Although I may not agree with most what Keheliya says, this is an act that is nessasary to save our young muslim generation from extremists. Well done.

    Mayu Tuesday, 05 June 2012 03:45 AM

Even there were laws against corruption.!

    Asif Tuesday, 05 June 2012 03:59 AM

We never supported Tamil Terror In SL and by harassing Muslims SL is inviting more trouble.
SL govt should worry about the state of the Economy which is in total chaos and this will invite unrest amongst the citizens of SL who are starving.Robberies and murders are rampant and this is the only way of survival for an Sri Lankan today.People are starving and Pakistan cricket is bought down to ease pressure, for how long?

    Kapila Tuesday, 05 June 2012 04:27 AM

So simply pointing out the fact that most muslims support the ideology of Taliban/Al Qaeda is going to "provoke" ordinary muslims. Why? Isn't it our duty to tell the truth however uncomfortable it might sound to other people.

    Dhimmi Tuesday, 05 June 2012 04:39 AM

Yes islam is a religion of peace. Only the hate-mongers and jealous people are trying to target islam. Islam means peace. No taqqiya here just the truth. (smile)

    Hussein Tuesday, 05 June 2012 04:41 AM

Yes I knew there was a Jew hiding behind this. Maybe they want to sell us more weapons or olive oil. Oh, the inhumanity of the Jews. Why can't they co-exist with the most peaceloving community in the world? Why are the Jews so intolerant of other faiths? This is a question every "proud" mussalman should ask. (smile)

    roohani Tuesday, 05 June 2012 04:46 AM

I was once told, the Sinhalese would clash with either the Tamils or Muslims, I thought it was a joke, but is the beginning of something unwanted….I am sure we all hope it’s not.

    sam Tuesday, 05 June 2012 11:11 AM

anybody knows this! You are the media king, should make reasonable statement. why don't you talk about your Melbourne accident - tell the true story. We all like to hear.

    UKUSSA Monday, 04 June 2012 04:04 AM

We have had enough bloodshed in SL for so long. Do not talk nonsense and isolate SL in the eyes of the Internatonal Community. Jabbering nonsense for the survival of the Govt. and trying to fool the people for another term so that the bank account will swell while the poor suffer with the cost of living.

    Jawfer Sunday, 03 June 2012 05:18 PM

Rambukwella Again started to discriminate other society. this is what Sinhala only language introduced. Govt. never learn anything from lesson learned.
to divert burning issues Rambukwell giving these none nonsense statements

    Jegan Sunday, 03 June 2012 06:19 PM

Well done Jegan, true only thing they know is LTTE

    Kaslana Sunday, 03 June 2012 10:27 PM

There are many Muslims in Sri Lanka from Grandpass to Eastern province, as well as in our expatriate community who openly support Al Qauda and Islamic terror organizations by logistically supporting these organizations. Its a fact.

    Hussain Sunday, 03 June 2012 10:58 PM

How does Fowzie know? Does he have a crystal ball? Al Queda never advertises themselves openly, when they are in small groups. Its a very secretive organization. I totally agree with Rambukwella " Prevention is better than cure and that is an accepted fact, we are following the developments in the rest of the world”

mervyn pererat Monday, 04 June 2012 03:14 AM

By trying to introduce these new regulations against Muslims, the govt of Sri Lanka is only inviting the extremist Muslims like al quaeda and other groups to sri Lanka. Is this after the Dambulla mosque fiasco. Where is Sri Lanka heading. Why cannot Rambukwella take up residence in Australia so that he can break his other limbs also.

    Machan Monday, 04 June 2012 03:36 AM

After receiving treatment from Australian hospital...he has re charged the old habits.

    Nodrog Monday, 04 June 2012 03:43 AM

“ Prevention is better than cure and that is an accepted fact" should have heeded this advise while in Australia on a balcony

    Ayam Monday, 04 June 2012 03:41 AM

    Mohd Monday, 04 June 2012 04:14 AM

Nonsense .... Government is trying to deviate its people by creating and fabricating stories like these!!! When did SL face any problems from Muslim community and what did the Islam do it???

    citizen1 Monday, 04 June 2012 05:03 AM

Too bad the minister's mouth remained intact on his Australian trip.

Mohamed nilam Monday, 04 June 2012 05:14 AM

I think cost of living gonna go up again.

    Nodrog Monday, 04 June 2012 05:38 AM

    Nodrog Monday, 04 June 2012 05:39 AM

We were spared this moron's idiotic comments for a while and now he's back with a vengeance.

asoka abeywardena Monday, 04 June 2012 06:37 AM

no matter what the organisation is, may it be al qaeda, thaliban, jihad, ltte or jvp...crush them at the very beginning...and let all sri lankans live peacefully as one nation...

    razin Monday, 04 June 2012 06:51 AM

Lets talk something worth for the betterment of the nation rather speaking about this kind of unnecessary narrow minded things which may pave way for disrupting the One Sri Lanka dream of our Excellency President. First of all learn to step your honorable leg firmly on floor wherever you go.

    Shirley Monday, 04 June 2012 07:47 AM

Well said my friend you have said a mouthful to this joker.

    Manish Monday, 04 June 2012 08:05 AM

The law should target all extremist, nationalistic, groups such as LTTE,TNA, JVP, alqaida, hela urumaya,

    #Sri Monday, 04 June 2012 08:35 AM
