A newly designed uniform will be issued to the police service to give it a more people-friendly outlook, Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne told Parliament today during the committee stage debate of the budget.
He said the police ordinance would also be amended soon.
The budgetary allocations for the Defence and Urban Development Ministry and institutions coming under it were taken up for debate.
However, the opposition parliamentarians who participated in the debate were critical of what they called 'the politicisation of the police service'.
United National Party (UNP) MP Palitha Range Bandara said the police service had been crippled today with the personnel left in the lurch.
He said police officers did not have the guts to stand up to political pressure.
Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said the police even shied away from political goons who unleashed violence against supporters of his party in the Moneragala District in the run up to the Uva Provincial Council elections.
He said the goons had opened fire at the home of a JVP candidate but sadly though the police were helpless in taking any action. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

What a waste of public funds. It is not the uniform that makes them people friendly. It is the way they behave and act. Killing and beating public at will not make them people friendly. To become people friendly they must be unshackled from political inference. Let us hope this happens one day!!!

new uniforms wont make good, people friendly police, it is training in people skills and a bit of common sense and compassion that they need.

Top priority should be to eliminate the thugs from the Department of police. In police both men and women shoul never manhandle or should never use obscene language on any civilian.A young female should be able call over at a police station and make a complaint without any fear.

Not the outside look. Change the inside, the attitudes from top down and bottom up.

There is no need to dress up with a newly designed uniform to be an honest police officer. It is just a waste of public funds if nothing changes except the looks.
