President Mahinda Rajapaksa had embraced neo-liberal economic policies in his budgetary proposals for 2011 even more than late President J.R. Jayewardene and former President Chandrika Kumaratunga, the JVP said today.

Addressing a press conference, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said today that the government had relaxed foreign exchange regulations as a step towards the opening up of the Capital Account which the past leaders failed to do despite their attempts in this regard.

“We would now like to know what those ruling party elements who crow over patriotism and a national economic do now.  They have joined the government for perks. What have they got to say now?” he asked. ( Kelum Bandara )

Perhaps the JVP could explain why they are against a liberal economy? Do they want us to seclude ourselves from the rest of the world like North Korea? The JVP simply wants to maintain their control over the ineffective government sector.

JVP is right. But what MR does is i think the best thing to do in this juncture. He is bringing in neo-liberal policies in the name of 'national economy' and 'mahinda chinthanaya'. Opening up the capital account is however could be a mistake if they do it soon.

The question of significance we should raise in this regard is whether the liberal policies under contemplation will assist ushering in resurgence and dynamism in the national economy wilth all the associated benefits, namely, an enhanced level of economic activities, increased employment opportunities for the people, an improvement in the gross national product, among others. If, in effect, they do, is it rational for us to dismiss them as undesirable? Where does the so called 'patriotism' feature in this economic equation?
