Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa’s nomination to contest the general election benefited the United National Party (UNP), Minister John Amaratunga said today.

He said many SLFP front-liner including ministers had decided to join the UNP but had missed out on the nominations because by that time the list of candidates had been finalised.

The minister told a media briefing at the UNP headquarters, Sirikotha that President Maithripala Sirisena’s decision to satisfy the SLFP by giving nomination to the former president has directly and indirectly benefited the UNP.

“Some say the President thought it better for the SLFP if Mr. Rajapaksa was allowed to contest the election while some say he will not be allowed to contest elections though given nominations. We don’t care whether Mr. Rajapaksa contests or does not contest because either way the UNP will be benefitted,” he said. (Piyumi Fonseka)

MS had the chance to be the hero who removed the dictator but now Ranil will be the hero who both removed the dictator and developed the country

Definitely so, I who has never ever voted for UNP is compelled to put the cross against the elephant.

Mahinda cannot win as Prabakaran is not there any more to support him as was done in earlier elections. 2014 election proved this.

Mahinda - Duminda combination would have been the best to ensure 2/3rd majority for the UNF group. We look forward to better times under UNP with checks and balances by Maithree, Champika and co - Good combination for the nation.

Many UNP candidates over estimate thinking defeating UPFA is a cake walk. Yes if UNP penetrated to rural vote base. Jonny knows, that What would be the fate

    ANTON Sunday, 12 July 2015 05:25 PM

Last elections it was Sumanadasa the fortune teller who paved the way for the UNP to win and this time the former President himself is paving the way. If Mahinda is not contesting, then 58 (25% of 62) = 73.5 lakhs for the UPFA and about 75% of 62 which is 46.5 lakhs for UNP

podi seeya Sunday, 12 July 2015 05:15 PM

You are telling me John. MR and his goons are already deleted out of the system

    Sikuru Sunday, 12 July 2015 05:05 PM

After Aug17 UNP will be the most powerful and the JVP will come second and the SLFP will be almost a minor party

    Sikuru Sunday, 12 July 2015 04:46 PM

True, by giving nominations for MR the UPFA has committed suicide, the UNP is now several times stronger
