MP Sritharan glorifies Prabhakaran

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian S. Sritharan today read out a prepared statement in Parliament glorifying and romanticizing the acts of slain LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran.

Prabhakaran’s birth anniversary also fell today. Mr. Sritharan, who justified the cause fostered by the LTTE called it a freedom struggle and stressed the need to commemorate the slain LTTE leaders and cadres on Mahaveer day.

However, hisspeech drew widespread condemnation from government benchers. Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake hit back at Mr. Sritharan saying Prabhakaran was responsible for the killing of so many leaders of both communities.

Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara was also opposed the statement made by the TNA MP.

Meanwhile, Government MP Hunais Farook asked that the controversial sections in Mr. Sritharan speech be expunged from the Hansard. Murugesu Chandrakumar, the Deputy Chairman of Committees, gave an order to that effect. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

This is a deliberate attempt to antagonise the Sinhalese majority and carry on the campaign for a separate state. This is no different to the strategy that has been adapted by various Tamil terror outfits and mastered by the LTTE. IF TNA want genuine reconciliation, they would not resort to abuse of parliamentary privileges in this fashion.

Had the majority community had been very accommodative of
the minorities, the later would have never gone into an arms
fight with the majority government. Had the then govt of SL offered equal rights and self determination to the minorities, the birth of LTTE would never have occured. SL in a way is responsible for the creation of the LTTE. No one likes to endorse what the LTTE did was right, it will be completely inhuman. But the formers actions were also not credible in having complete harmony of all religions,sects, linguistics people getting bonded together. No one admires their children or fight against a well equipped whole army, unless their heart and minds have been wounded deeply by the past. What is important here is to see how the SL Govt progresses in devolving federal powers to the north and the east Tamil dominated areas
