Medical services in more than 900 hospitals have come to a standstill today due to the strike action launched by professionals in the medical sector.
Many professionals in the public sector including doctors, engineers, accountants and senior public servants are on a token strike today against certain budgetary decisions.
Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) today said at a media briefing that the action was in response to the budget cuts on government employees’ pension scheme and potential threats to public sector employees posed by CEPA (Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement), which they claimed to be signed in January.
GMOA Spokesman Dr. Navin de Soysa said health workers around 932 hospitals across the country including two national hospitals, 30 teaching hospitals, 18 district hospitals, 82 base hospitals and 800 other hospitals had not reported to work today.
However, he said as a result of the strike action, they would keep no room to harm a single patient and maternal and child care services.
He said emergency outpatient services would function as usual. (Piyumi Fonseka)

If a patient dies in a Hospital today, the relevant doctor should be charged with murder. Are our politicians wimps? These qualified but uneducated doctors must be taught a lesson. I prefer if Premadasa style punishment is used.

How much money spend by the govt under free education for a doctor ? These taxed money from the Innocent people of the country. They ask imposed further tax on general public and provide they duty free vehicles. How fair this is ? In my opinion more more private universities should be established no other solution.

These so called doctors should be ashamed of their actions today. The government should not give into their demands. If they are to give duty free permits to buy cars they should give it to all the other government servants. What these arrogant doctors should know is that they are the servants of the public.

Are these Doctors NOT in breach of their Oath? Are they not defecating on the "Hippocratic Oath" they have so solemnly taken?? I wish to remind them of the last few lines of the Oath:" ...... If I fulfill this oath and do not violate it, may it be granted to me to enjoy life and art, being honored with fame among all men for all time to come; if I transgress it and swear falsely, may the opposite of all this be my lot. "

These so called Doctors who only think of earning money and no values for human lives has to be taken to task.Government must be strict and put every one on no pay and a letter to the personal file, like the Public sector or get them suspended. The whole issue here is discipline.
