DOHA: Qatar is expected to attract more Sri Lankan job-seekers as the National Recruitment Committee in Saudi Arabia has said that it will refrain from signing further employment contracts with workers from the island nation. Recruitment agencies here expect many will turn to Doha, due to its huge job potential.

“We believe job-seekers might turn to Doha if the doors to Saudi Arabia are closed. There are many jobs available here,” said a Sri Lankan recruitment agency in Doha. They also claim to have no problems in recruiting procedures.

The National Recruitment Committee in Saudi Arabia had urged all private recruitment offices in the country to refrain from signing further contracts for the employment of Sri Lankans, reports said.

The Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha said it has not received any information on the issue. “No, we are not informed about it” said
A Tharmakulasingham, Counsellor, Sri Lankan Embassy in Doha.

Standard recruitment procedures are followed by the embassy as per memorandum of understanding signed between Qatar and Sri Lanka in 2008. “It was implemented in August this year and followed successfully,” Tharmakulasingham further said.

However, the recent developments pertaining to the rights of workers in Saudi Arabia have worried Sri Lankan residents in Doha too. A family planning to move from Doha to Riyadh by the end of this year said: “There are conflicting reports about Sri Lankan employment in Saudi, we have to really confirm it with the officials there as we cannot take a risk.”

“If a ban is implemented, I hope it will not effect the present workers there, my brother is employed in Jeddah through a recruitment agency,” said another Sri Lankan resident.  The Peninsula

We have now lost the Saudi market. We have not gained anything tangible from Qatar. Many people will lose opportunities because of this.

    Faqi Wednesday, 06 October 2010 06:17 PM

Qatar is a much more civilized place than vile Saudi Arabia. It is a much better option for Sri lankan workers to work in a place like Qatar.

and some go back and been living there for .........Years

First of all one has to understand that there is huge difference between Saudi & Qatar market size thus availability of jobs. Saudi is a massive country with high influx of visitors for Haj/Omrah etc., with a big job market. Even though Qatar is very rich, the job market size is much smaller. I wonder whether people understand this well, before making those comments.

No Need to go any country for our livelihood. because our government confirmed that they will make our country wonder of Asia. Now UDA got 10 billion by issuing debentures. better all sri lankan lets go back to wonder of Asia.

    No need to blame others

This is not unique to Sri Lanka. Even countries with relative progress like Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia have a huge number of expatriate workers. Even Malaysia 35000 overstayers in the UK.

    This trend will continue.

Qata is best for skilled workers but not for labours or housemaiders,Don't mix up

If we loose the market in Saudi Arabia, This is a better opportunity.

    N. Komali Wednesday, 06 October 2010 05:44 AM

Had authorities failed to obtain compensation for the nailed maid? They create big stir only and consequently depriving opportunities of others.

    Concerned Wednesday, 06 October 2010 05:41 AM

Walk along our Welikada Prison. Do you find a reason to close your nostrils? But it is not easy to walk along the road next to a Saudi Prison without blocking your nostrils. So you can imagine the difference!

Arab News Reported that this is only a media speculation.

Waleed Al-Sweidan, the former chairman of the Saudi Arabian National Recruitment Committee (SANARCOM) who is currently its official representative at the Ministry of Labor, told Arab News that it is media speculation. "We have had no news about this ban and the recruitment flow from Colombo has been uninterrupted," he said.

L.K. Ruhunuge, additional general manager at the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) told Arab News from Colombo that the reports were baseless. "ALFEA is an umbrella association which has an estimated membership of around 200 out of the 800 recruitment agencies in Sri Lanka," Ruhunuge said, adding that the association had no legal authority to sign international agreements on behalf of the government.

A Saudi nailed a Sri Lankan woman and now they ban contacts with Sri Lankans. Should the latter and its media keep their mouths shut not to upset Saudis?

    ahmed Wednesday, 06 October 2010 04:57 AM

All Gulf countries are same. The people who work in qatar can only feel how the situation is here. many companies are not paying employees salary in time. After 6 months only there will be a salary. and in between we can get the food allowance of 300 Riyal just to live here. So how our family will survive in sri lanka.. Therefore my kind request is to not to put people into problem.. They will only suffer here after paying 100000-150000 for foreign recruitment agencies in sri lanka. only poor people only how hard to pay this agency recruitment fee and come here.

    TDDC Wednesday, 06 October 2010 04:52 AM

They are sub human and nailed our poor women who survived to tell the story. But some came home in coffins.

    DXB Wednesday, 06 October 2010 04:09 AM

If they ban recruit from Sri Lanka due to Meadia , We thank all the meadia for the great Job, Our opporunity cost is far higher than just SR 500/= paid towards a house maid .

    Sudath Wednesday, 06 October 2010 04:04 AM

Pls avoid sending women as housemaids.

    Fayad Wednesday, 06 October 2010 04:00 AM

    pwc Wednesday, 06 October 2010 03:46 AM

    Yuri Wednesday, 06 October 2010 03:35 AM

Thank you to acccept Orw Slaves. we should be proud of our self. in the late 60s Ceylon was secound in living standard in Asia, Look now we are happy to be slaves in foreigin nation. WHAT WENT WRONG!

    safeek- Wednesday, 06 October 2010 03:24 AM

Saudi Arabia's ban should be a lesson for Sri Lankan Media that goes in deep criticism without considering far reaching consequences

Percy Mandawala Wednesday, 06 October 2010 03:23 AM

Out of all Arab countries, Soudi Arabia is the country having a worst human right record.
