The Arts Faculty and the Agriculture Faculty of the Peradeniya University were indefinitely closed till further notice, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the Peradeniya University Prof. K. Premaratne told Daily Mirror online

Prof. Premaratne added that this closure was not due to any disturbance at the university but was decided by the VC advisory committee as students from different faculties had common programs and as some faculties were closed those students would get affected.

The Engineering and Science Faculties of the University of Peradeniya were also closed last week. (Daily Mirror online)

Graduate and GCE(AL) unemployment is a problem that existed since 1968.Except for Mr.Dudley Senanayake we did not have a leader with a longterm vision for the country. They were worried about their Race, Religion, Caste and Family and all purveyed the state resources to meet those ends. This is a problem that can be solved within 2-3 years if one is interested.

The Queen of an Asian Country advised it's women to spread their legs to foreigners. her word were " value not what you are trying to protect, spread it to earn money.
This had been the motto of our leaders since 1977

The present lot will never solve this problem. Private Universities is not the solution.

JVp and the Government both have the same goal. To close all universities. It's better to close all technicle colleges too because easy to solve the unemployment problem.

    neville Saturday, 30 October 2010 11:34 AM

For graduates no jobs in Sri lanka. So after completing A/L train them to go after O/L pass politician and to get a job.
Then close down all the universities.

TO THE EDITOR: The last sentence/paragrapgh in the news refers to a clash which is misleading. There was a clash in Science Faculty but the Engineering Faculty was closed a week before the science faculty because the faculty decided to go in to a lecture strike citing some of the remanded students will miss their lectures and exams. Get your story right!

The higher education in a total mess. Could be due to the uncharismatic mouth of the minister.

Kundu mali Friday, 29 October 2010 07:31 PM

    Rajitha Friday, 29 October 2010 05:24 PM

why putting thumbs down? i suggest you people do a bit of a survey on uni students and figure it out urselves. i've been there and graduated at 24 so i know what's going on inside.

    Maheshi Friday, 29 October 2010 05:07 PM

    kumar Friday, 29 October 2010 03:46 PM

ALSO, FREE EDUCATION PAID FOR BY TAX PAYERS!! Why are there no such trouble in universities of other countries? Because they (the parents) are required to PAY.

    Rajitha Friday, 29 October 2010 02:32 PM

that's no true.. most sri lankans graduate around 24 +/- 1 years.
students sit for AL's at 19, enter the university at 20 and graduate at 23. those who get selected to special degrees graduate at 24.

    Dr.No Friday, 29 October 2010 02:26 PM

Closing of faculties, very good for countries education. Yes, for the Banana Republic.

    garawi Friday, 29 October 2010 02:03 PM

JVP has started the campaign again to mislead the students and disrupt the social fabric of the country . This time they should not be allowed to do do so! I support the government in this act completely.

    Man B Friday, 29 October 2010 01:53 PM

its very good for our countries education.

    Dr.No Friday, 29 October 2010 01:40 PM

Total agree with what you say. If there is real economic there is no time for people to think politics. Sri Lanka had a flourishing telecommunication sector. It is being killed by high taxes. The recruitment into the telecom field almost stopped. This causes frustration and the unrest.

    pandula Friday, 29 October 2010 01:32 PM

In Sri Lanka we graduate around 28 years old. Graduates from medicine will get jobs from GOV. But for others have to go behind politicians, senior managers, company owners to get a job or sometime luckly unbiased interview from private sector. Then others do sth and start siting for gov exams then he/she will be in her 40s, then do any thing for living. you can find mechanical engineers are working as train drivers, more if you go to villages most of arts graduate are working in communication centers. Girls finally put their all efforts to find a husbond with a job beside education. This is the real situation which we are facing. Most people think that this is due to JVP but I think this is due to no economic development in our country and most of the things have become a function of politics which is leading by many people who had not a formal education. Hope dailymirror will publish this unrest on my mind

    Rajitha Friday, 29 October 2010 01:16 PM

better to keep them closed until the dust settles. hopefully by that time the JVP would be gone

    polkiccha Friday, 29 October 2010 12:54 PM

and the stupidity of the students who are enticed by a few fancy words from the seniors who are in turn foxed by bankrupt political parties and their ideologies.
