A Buddhist monk  of a temple in Egoda Uyana, Moratuwa, was stabbed to death last night over a land dispute, police said.

Following the incident the villagers have set fire to the alleged attackers' houses, which were built illegally within the temple premises.

Meanwhile, the two main suspects, who had fled the area after committing the crime, were found shot dead in the Bandaragama area this morning, police said. (Pix by Kusal Chamath)

Monks have a great time, They do all illegal activities in the temple when ladies come to worship. Those goods days are gone.

    Richardson Monday, 04 February 2013 08:12 AM

Your comment is 50% stupid. . if a low life thug builds a house in the temple land , What do you expect the monk to do ??

    Justinian Monday, 04 February 2013 08:54 AM

Monk stabbed to death, killers shot dead.
tooth to tooth, for one two paid life.

    Gossip1 Monday, 04 February 2013 09:06 AM

yeah, but the solution isnt just letting the temple premises to go. Temple premises are not for the benefit of the monk. it is there to spread the word of Buddha. You think people will tolerate if this happened in a church of a mosque. They respect for what they belie in. So people should not steal stuff from temple. so you cant blame the monk. its the wrong doings of the man who did that

This is what happens when Monks lose their way and unnecessarily get involved in matters not related to religion.

    lee Monday, 04 February 2013 08:06 AM

BBS!!!!!!!!! 1st look in to the sinhalese who have robbed temple lands....then you look in to others ( if they have done anything like that)

Shaik Anwar Ahamath Monday, 04 February 2013 12:08 PM

It is very sad that people seem to take the law into their own hands because as events had shown, the authorities entrusted to safeguard peoples rights do very little for them. If the unfortunate monk was even half like the many monks I have met, he would have offered alternative accommodations to the villager who might have stubbornly refused as most seem under the impression they have a right to property if built on it, no matter to whom it belonged..

The main question is who killed the suspects?

    Leonard Monday, 04 February 2013 06:15 PM

Arrest the deputy chairman. Indict and thereafter instruct Attorney General to withdraw the case - Kathriarachchi Niyaya.

Ken Jones Monday, 04 February 2013 07:57 AM

Lord Buddha shunned politics and worldly possessions.

But looking at the Sri Lankan Buddhist monks clamoring for power and worldly possessions I am getting totally confused.
