A fashion model and teledrama actress, and another woman were fined Rs.250 each and imposed a three-month sentence suspended for five years when they were produced in a Mount Lavinia Court on charges of having engaged in mobile-phone prostitution.

Mount Lavinia Magistrate Ruchira Veliwatte ordered that they pay Rs.250 as fine with three months imprisonment and be suspended for five years.

The two women were arrested in 2009 by the Colombo Special Crimes Investigation Unit while they were opposite the Liberty Plaza Shopping Complex on a tip off received by the police.

The investigations carried out by a team of police officers headed by the OIC Jananda De Silva had revealed that the actress had worked as a marketing manager in a private company.

The two women are alleged to have been sex workers charging clients amounts between Rs.10,000 and Rs.15,000.

The other suspects who were charged with procuring prostitutes pleaded guilty at the beginning of the trial while the two women suspects pleaded not guilty.

Mount Lavinia Magistrate Ruchira Welivatte held that the prosecution had proved the case beyond doubt and imposed the fine and suspended sentence. (T.Farook Thajudeen)

CID & GOVT searching only small crime cases but large criminals are freely enjoying in the country yard, will govt have guds to catch them and give proper punishment?

    Alex Monday, 20 February 2012 02:39 AM

Is this the only matter the police has to investigate?

New rule in the west: Soliciting or luring is crime, not by appointment.

i notice you didn't mention the free secondary healthcare, free primary, secondary, AND Tertiary education that those in many countries don't have ;)

Shelton Fernando Sunday, 19 February 2012 05:12 PM

This is over-reaction. There are enough of serious crimes that police can prevent if they really want to rather than going behind actresses and models. If these two women were under the "sponcership" of a VIP no one would have approached them except for potential clients. Dear police why don't you concentrate on some productive crack down

    Nodrog Sunday, 19 February 2012 01:29 PM

why even bother to arrest them if the fine is only Rs. 250? Waste of time, paper-work and Police going under-cover.....just for Rs. 250?

    Nodrog Sunday, 19 February 2012 10:22 AM

why are the police so actively going after the prostitution like it's the only crime or the biggest sin in this country? Are they afraid their sons will patronize?

    This is not the crime.

    faqi Saturday, 18 February 2012 05:30 PM

Big Deal . The police should go after criminals and not after these women who hurt no one. In any case its a victimless "crime". No one was hurt or robbed. Its one free will, in a free society.
