Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena he had a discussion with his officials regarding quacks who practised in the country posing a threat to patients seeking treatment from them. It is estimated that there are about 50,000 such quacks in the country.

A ministry official told the Daily Mirror that the minister had instructed his officials to draft a new law to be placed before Parliament very soon. According to the official, the punishment for such illegal medical practitioners is very mild, and the minister had felt that stern action should be taken against them in future.

The minister had reckoned that at least a five-year jail term should be introduced for such offences. The official said that there were instances when quacks even administered injections to patients. (Kelum Bandara)

I presume that may be the Minister do not speak good English but my view is that he is one of the best preforming Minister in the cabinet doing good and honest service to the nation.

I am very pleased to hear that the Health Minister taking action against the quacks medical practitioners. Next step should be taking action is to close some of the pharmacists who take a crash course for six months and open pharmacies all over the country and giving wrong medications. Luckly I carry my BNF with me all the time.

it should be more than that because they play with lives of people.

Before we say this is a good move, first of all how do the minister measure one is a quack. If they are trying to crack down Gume inna Vedas who gives trea herbs for healing, then this is a commercial/political move to promote deadly poisonous pharmaceutical drugs that brings a large revenue to those drug dealers in the country probably their own friends. If the minister is considering those black magic healers as quacks who say that their manthare and the guliya will cure the disease, then it is not a bad move.
