Mervyn Silva, Minister of Public Relations and Public Affairs, prevented the scheduled sacrifice of hundreds of animals at the Sri Bhadra Kali Amman Kovil in Munneswaram (Munneswaram Kovil) in Chillaw today by handing the animals over to the Chillaw Police.

Earlier the acting District Court judge issued an order temporarily suspending the scheduled animal sacrifice, acting on a request made by the Chilaw Police.

this man has mercy for animals.

    Christopher D.D. Wednesday, 14 September 2011 09:40 AM

Guys, what did Lord Buddha eat when he was in the Jungle? Vegetarian food? How are you people going to eat Kottu Rotti without killing animals? Per day in Sri Lanka, there at least 2500 cows are slaughtered. Just imagine if you multiply that by 300 days , we finish off with 750,000 cows per year. Suppose if we did not slaughter these cows and eat it, do you think we will have Humans or Cows in Sri Lanka like you cows?

    chitra. Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:29 AM

At least he has done one thing right.

    UFO Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:32 AM

Oh boy! This time you have done a great job. Try your best to stop it forever.

    Imran Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:43 AM

if a person can survive without killing any living creature, I would be the first person to adopt such a way
of life. In the past people thought plants were lifeless. Today it is a universal fact that even plants have life. Thus their logic of not killing living creatures is not fulfilled even by being a pure vegetarian.

    dinuka Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:45 AM

Well done MERVIN. This is why we like you...
do the correct thing when it is required...
    Thumbs up :D

roshan Pil Wednesday, 14 September 2011 04:46 AM

how practical is that ? i think you should practice it first by not taking any medicine for any decease because you kill germs .
Just explain how someone from north and south pole can be Buddhist because they don’t get anything other than flesh to eat.
Hey be practice. But i don’t say Buddhism is not a practical religion.

    iNO Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:38 AM

we should ban all forms of animal killing in sri lanka. chicken goats cows pigs and fish should be banned from being consumed. This is a buddhist country and should be a safe haven for all forms of life. people should eat only vegetarian diet

one can see how politics have affected our lives. i'm dead against with Mervin Silvas derty politics but you need to appreciate his good work too. as an animal lover this man has wiped out all his past sins by involving in this one good thing (no matter even it is another political drama)

    Sane Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:17 AM

Will anyone agree someone came and forcefully stop using elephant in Perahara, telling its against the freedom of wild animals? Don't poke into religion, These activities will only emphasis the necessity for the separate state for Tamils. May God Save Sri Lanka.

Rasika Alwis Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:29 AM

Selfish humans are talking about their rights. what about the rights of animals. They also do have a right to exist in this world. Nature will answer this question in an appropriate time. Good work of Mr. Silva

    abdul Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:25 AM

religion and ethnic groups aside, this is great news for animal lovers and animal protection associations in Sri lanka.

    Dr.Raghavan.P Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:30 AM

Well done Minister.I salute you for saving numerous innocent animals.I belong to an Iyengar Brahmin family and thoroughly soaked in all three branches of Hinduism. No where it is written in any Hindu Ahama or Idihasa book or shastras that animal sacrification will please the god. This has been done by all Poojaris for their own gains. No religion permits such kind of mad actions..I am sure that your entire generation will have the blessings of all those saved animals. You are a true Buddhist. You are unlike the hypocrite Karunanidhi on one side he accuses the religion and other side he supports these backward actions. It is also surprising me that so called no Hindu MPs in Sri lanka never tried their best to stop this madness.

    Mark Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:15 AM

Can he prevent the spread of Drugs in the Country ???

    Dobi Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:38 AM

UK TAMIL BOY Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:40 AM

    Ha........ ha .......... What ....... A ....... Joke...... ?
    Ayyo....... Ayyo.

    DG Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:41 AM

    Excellent !!!

    marusira Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:21 AM

This is typical political thuggery. Sri Lanka is supposed to be a democracy, and people should have the freedom to do whatever they like as long as they don't break the law of the land. These do gooders should not try to force their opinions
down others' throats. If Mr Silva ( I am sorry Dr Silva) don't want to eat meat, that is fine, but if someone else like to eat meat, that is fine too.

    raj Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:01 PM

muslims around the world slaught animals to have healthy meat by thrushing the blood out of animals since blood has all toxic in the body of the animals.

    DHA Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:35 AM

Me being Hindu truly welcome Mervin's move......well done...Cos this is totally against any religious moves....

    93 EVER Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:09 PM

What does Buddhism have to say about animal rights? Among the world's hundreds of millions of Buddhists, there is disagreement about this basic issue. I first became interested in Buddhism because two of my favourite restaurants (Buddha's Vegetarian Foods and the Lotus Garden, both on Dundas Street West in Toronto) are Buddhist, and are very careful to serve only vegetarian food with no eggs. In one restaurant I was told that this was necessary because Buddhist monks and nuns eat there. This suggested to me that Buddhism takes the plight of nonhuman animals very seriously indeed. On the other hand, my fiancé and I have several friends who are Buddhist, but continue to eat meat and feel this is consistent with Buddhism.

Do Buddhists, or at least Buddhist nuns and monks, have to be vegetarian? What does Buddhism have to say about our treatment of animals in general?

    henry Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:44 AM

sane - slaughtering animals and elephants taking part in perehara cannot be compared, do not display your stupidity publicly.

    IND Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:37 AM

I think you trying to create something, where nobody see anything what you see from this.

    Apsara Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:38 AM

Tie mervin to a mango tree.

Ahmed Lebbe Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:33 AM

Muslims are already living in fear due to grease devils. Now with the month of Haj approaching we fear that we will not be able to practise our religious rite of slaughter.
Shame that this country does not repect the rights of other religions. No wonder weare pulled up at the UNHCR.

Sonali Fernando Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:19 PM

    Mervyn Silva = Parasite

    IND Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:45 AM

    Idiot! any cough, call UN.

    93 EVER Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:20 PM

One thing Mr MERVIN should accept that he is not taking meal without MEAT this is not joke To resolve this controversy, it is necessary, I feel, to return to the Buddhist scriptures and see what (if anything) they have to say about the issue.

    IND Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:39 AM

Save Sri Lanka ? Poh, truely loved SRI LANKANS !!!!!!

    CjeZ Tuesday, 13 September 2011 08:48 AM

Yeah you can do the killing of innocent creatures in some other country.
And on Sane's elephant thing: Are they eating elephants after the Perahera?

    chandima Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:39 AM

if they stop carts, you will be out of work soon..

    nSathees Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:32 AM

    Oh ohooo,
That is bad! This is a problem. Mervin is not the god!

    Rahmathullah M. H Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:38 PM

For Mervin & Co, killing animal is sin, but killing humans of opposing views is fun! Human lives have become cheaper than animals in this so called modern and civilized world!

    maithree Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:40 AM

Honorable Minister, it is not the teaching of Lord Buddha or of his practice to stope any one from animal sacrifices. It is the teaching of Lord Buddha to advice and teache people to avoid sacrificing/harming animals. Pls do not defame Buddhism or Lord Buddha for your political achievements. Pls have a look at the book of Venerable Naradha "The Buddhism" if you have any difficulty in listening to Sanga.

    Bambuwa Tuesday, 13 September 2011 06:40 PM

isn't it a SIN killing FISH? Isn't Killing Chicken is a
SIN in Buddhism? Why the majority is targeting only slaughtering of Cow? Insane theory of fundamentalists

    Mohd. Tuesday, 13 September 2011 11:40 AM

This is nonsensical!!! Playing against the faith or belief of people is too dangerous!!! Who is Mervin to do this??? There is law and if it is of the constitution, no one can stay against it!!!
Mervin Silva is extorting hundreds of innocent human being on daily basis and is doing the bigger crimes in the Country as a whole. He is the God Father of Crimes in Sri Lanka and is a bloody murderer (in the sense of killing the feelings of Innocent Human Beings) …
Killing animals for the good course (i.e.: eating and prayers) are acceptable and is allowed by almost all the religious scriptures. Try to understand the value of so ….
Moreover, he and his family members should stop consuming non-veg. in the first place and also insist his gangsters and supporters to stop eating non-veg. Most of his rowdies are fond of Meat, Fork, Chicken, Egg and Fish.

    S Aran Johnny Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:04 PM

So I take it that killing plants is alright? Very strange logic indeed!

    S Aran Johnny Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:05 PM

Spot on Dils. This is exactly what short sighted silly actions like this would achieve.

    S Aran Johnny Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:07 PM

Yeah ... He will not be able to kick you up your backside when you don't co-operate!

    S Aran Johnny Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:10 PM

Sorry - but at the crux of the matter is the same thing. Animal rights is the same for a cow or an elephant.

    S Aran Johnny Tuesday, 13 September 2011 07:10 PM

Sorry - but at the crux of the matter is the same thing. Animal rights is the same for a cow or an elephant.

AS A HINDU MYSELF, I WELCOME THIS. KILLING ANIMALS TO GET GRACE FROM ANY GOD IS STUPID. LET ALL HINDUS JOIN HANDS WITH OUR BUDDHIST BROTHERS TO STOP ANIMAL SACRIFICE IN TEMPLES. BUT KIILING ANIMALS FOR FOOD IS AN INDIVIDUAL CHOICE.

    why Tuesday, 13 September 2011 09:05 AM

Yes...all that buddhist do is right...but others do wrong...any idea why Sri Lanka being such a buddhist country have the highest per person consumption of liquor in thw world?

    ASFAR Tuesday, 13 September 2011 09:13 AM
