Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya will have a meeting with the representatives of political parties tomorrow to decide on the elections to the two remaining local government bodies in the Northern Province, officials said yesterday.
The elections are yet to be conducted for the Puthukuduiruppu and Maritime Pattu Pradeshiya Sabhas in the Mullaitivu district.
Mr. Deshapriya said that he would discuss the matters pertaining to the election tomorrow with the representatives of the respective political parties.
Earlier, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said that they wanted a postponement of the election.
These were the two areas where pitched battles were fought during the war time. TNA MP Selvam Adaikkalanathan said at a recent meeting with the representatives of the Department that it would be advisable to postpone the election since the resettlement process had not yet been completed.
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) also held the same view with regard to this election. (Kelum Bandara)
