The official residence of former minister Keheliya Rambukwella (on Keppetipola Mawatha Colombo 7) is to become the official residence of President Maithripala Sirisena, government sources said.

This building was earlier used by D.B. Wijetunga as his official residence when he was president. It is reported that the premises are now being renovated.

Mr. Maithripala Sirisena had announced, some time ago, that he would not reside at President’s House or at Temple Trees if he were elected President.

Sources also said that the residence occupied at present by President Sirisena, on Wijerama Mawatha Colombo 7, which he had occupied since the time he was a minister would now be handed over to former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.(Ajantha Kumara Agalakada)

It happened in 1983 too. But they were looking for all houses not for inclusiveness, but to exclude them.

Good one. Yes it was occupied by our former laundry man. Hope he has not left behind any dirty clothes.

A good example for simplicity. Thanks to new governance we enjoy simple way of living happily without being ruled by Kings who are funded by drug dealers, Casino operators and thugs.

Aba Jayasekera Friday, 06 February 2015 07:30 PM

Best thing is to keep the Temple Trees residence as a museum and charge the public about Rs.100 per person (for maintenance) to visit it and see the lavish style in which MR lived. This will expose his true colours and rally the public against him if he tries to enter parliament at the next elections

sammy aiya Friday, 06 February 2015 07:30 PM

The King might have lost, and we village folks might be losers, But the King is a King not a court jester ...Why not ask who lives in the presidents house... you will be surprised who is!!!

    Sam Saturday, 07 February 2015 10:02 PM

Only see the expenses. What about the multiplied revenues brought to this country by MR from where it was after CBK. President Premadasa left country in such bad state. Today where Sri Lanka is over last 10 years progress is unthinkable with any other leader.

    WILLY Friday, 06 February 2015 02:18 PM

GIVE MR the Presidential Palace he enjoys the good things in life and loves to live in style

Some backward Sri Lankans want to remain a 3rd world forever. MR upgraded our per capita income from CBK time USD850 to over USD3000 in 10 years.

    Sam Saturday, 07 February 2015 10:08 PM

If anyone is saying you can bring down cost of living in Sri Lanka or anywhere it is a lie good for fool people. This will never happen. With reprint of money all these will vanish over next few months. What is possible is to bring up standard of living. Thats what MR was doing by raising per capita income over time.

    chris Friday, 06 February 2015 10:46 AM

wow i guess u were among da 5 million LOSSES who voted for the KING

@Las - where were you when Mahinda/Gota built a whole new building for Auditor Generals Office so that they could renovate that one into the Arcade and fill it with shops that majority of SL folk cannot afford anything from.

    Ranga Friday, 06 February 2015 08:27 PM

Renovating means changing beds and pillows and other items. It seems like you want the President to sleep in the same bed of the balcony jumper and his sleep walking son used.

Eric Para Saturday, 07 February 2015 08:12 AM

I appreciate the simplicity displayed by the President. However a large sum of money being already spent in building President palaces around the country. Hence the President should use the already built housesg instead investing on renovation which is not productive. I respect the current President,s point of view. But it is difficult to agree on wasting public money in the name of simplicity.

    haris Friday, 06 February 2015 11:12 AM

Who is going to occupy the Temple Trees?

    Benji Friday, 06 February 2015 09:07 PM

I think renovating a building is cheaper than maintainin Temple Trees and Presidents House.

    JRS Friday, 06 February 2015 11:14 AM

Maintenance of Prez Palace is much higher than the renovation of this small (comparatively) building.

    sanduni Friday, 06 February 2015 03:11 PM

good to renovate , to maintain the buildings regardless of the user

Presidential residence or Temples tree maintenance cost could be high then the MP residence. Im impressed with our new president as keeping his words.

he cannot use it as it is only fitted for a king

    kuthbuddin Friday, 06 February 2015 11:59 AM

the official residence of the president is too congested area for business community and its up keep also is too expensive because to the close side of the sea..in this regards only he will use it as only for official purpose only.the residence should be permanently be shifted to somewhere its more accessible.

    Danu Friday, 06 February 2015 04:01 PM

Aiyo Sirisena. Why this "being modest" circus?

    BuffaloaCitizen Friday, 06 February 2015 12:00 PM

Temple tree consists of large dining areas that can feed thousands at any time, lush swimming pool, lush bedrooms with multifaceted dimming systems, conference halls with state of the art lighting. Does a simple third world country like ours need this kind of waste?

    Ranjit Friday, 06 February 2015 12:04 PM

    You.

    words Friday, 06 February 2015 04:30 PM

Hmmm.. wonder whether Soora saradiels Mansion tax will be charged from them!

    Veda-mama Friday, 06 February 2015 12:07 PM

Just one of the many lavish parties at "Temple Trees" for selected group of people from the general public merely to canvass votes, would have cost well above the expenditure incurred for the renovation. There was no mention about the utter waste of money at that time.

    Helaya Friday, 06 February 2015 04:31 PM

You should first remember that Sri lanka is NOT a third world country.

    Chryshan Friday, 06 February 2015 12:10 PM

Comments I have received and the comments Las has received for your idea says the truth. If you check the cost of renovations you will understand its just simple work a normal minister has. Not like previous regime who will spend billions to renovate to become better than presidents palace. Then you will understand who the idiot is.

    anon Friday, 06 February 2015 12:10 PM

So the residence on Wijerama Mawatha Colombo 7 goes to the former president?

    Rayees Friday, 06 February 2015 04:51 PM

May be. I too voted for him.... But, its a cost and its true.. lets accept.

    patriot Friday, 06 February 2015 12:15 PM

I am just thinking how big is the house the official residence of former minister Keheliya Rambukwella (on Keppetipola Mawatha Colombo 7)?

Arun Vincent Saturday, 07 February 2015 07:26 PM

Give the Presidents house to ex CJ Mohan Peiries, please.

why at all colombo? its better to be outside of colombo like sri jayawardena purea

    C.K.Lankaputhra Friday, 06 February 2015 12:51 PM

Mr. Las depicts the biggest tragedy of our country. What a set of people we have.

John Fernandez Friday, 06 February 2015 12:53 PM

If there is an official residence for the President why not occupy the same. This is not simplicity, this is cowardliness, and showing his inferiority.

    Lawry Friday, 06 February 2015 01:03 PM

There will be less inconveniences to the general public if the President locates himself there. Security was already good in this area.

Sri Lankan Saturday, 07 February 2015 08:20 PM

Why heckle on trivial issues like official residences. You should have better things to do without wasting your time. The Press should also not report on such trivial matters..
