Mattala tarmac work delayed

The construction of the Mattala International Airport has been delayed due to the non availability of a particular type of Bitumen used for the laying of the runway.Due to the shortage the work schedule is slated to be changed, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) sources said. The government expects to open the country’s second international airport by the end of 2011 and the three kilometer long tarmac is scheduled to be completed by March, 2011.
Meanwhile, Petroleum Resources Minister Susil Premajayantha today called a special progress review meeting at his ministry to assess the situation on learning the issue. (SAJ)

Are the Katunayake and Hambantota airports in different climatic regions? If not, why do you need two international airports in the same climatic region of a poor country like Sri Lanka?

we need a airport in middle of the country. if some one from Jaffna he have to travel to this Airport more than 600 Km.if it is in Dambulla area will be for good for everyone.slowly Colombo airport will closed or very less plane will arrive.we have per day arrivel not more than 30 .for this we don´t need such big second airport& not in Hambantota.

Surely, there should be more than one suppliers of Bitumen in the world. If one failed, should explore the possibility of obtaining elsewhere? Otherwise, how to meet the deadline?

SURELY THE PRACTICE IS TO HAVE CALLED FOR AT LEAST THREE TENDERS FOR THE SUPPLY OF THIS BITUMEN AT THE COMMENCEMENT OF THIS PROJECT WHAT WENT WRONG & WHY AT THIS STAGE???
