Matara bans Poya tuition

The Matara District Secretariat says a decision has been reached to ban tuition classes on Poya Days and on Sunday mornings following talks with the police and tuition teachers.

The move came just days after the Sabaragamuawa Provincial Council also took a similar decision. The ban comes following concerns that students tend to skip attending Temple for Poya prayers and Buddhist Sunday school.

its not that simple. A large number of teachers are incompetent. Only the few competent ones are able to continue with a thriving tuition business. So tuition allows students access to these few good teachers.

Why tution classes are required is because there is no proper education in many schools, due to one or more of the folowing reasons.
* No competent teachers.
* Inadequate library and laboratory facilities.
* Approved holidays and holidays due to political activities
* Competition to enter universities
* Capacity of syllebus
* and many more (HOPE SOME ONE WILL ADD)

Poya is not a holiday for any activities. It is suprising the view points of buddhists. Education is important, but teaching children of religion / spiritualism is most important, children are swayed by the present wave, unable to differenciate 'cos all what see around is so much of violence of all kind, how on earth are they going to keep the balance of mind if this trend continues?????

Yes Garawi! If the teachers can't properly teach the students while in class how on earth can they do so in a tuition class? Or are they bluffing in class in order to build up a clientele for the tuition class? But if in fact class hours are insufficient to cover a syllabus then there must be a departmental policy decision to amend the syllabus.

New Minister of Education (former Tuition Master) how about an honest study of the problem?

You cannot ban all tuition classes on Sunday and ask all children to go to Temple. Will they/ their parents do that??
First we have to see why everyone is so interesting going to classes than schools. That's where the problem lies. Not in classes.
So first evaluate the school system... the way teachers do their job, etc. Then Do the needful based on that.

I though tuition on sundays & poya days was banned. Then those engaged in tuition at present, should be penalised and fined at least. Rather than having tuition, isnt it better for the government to reintroduce the school hours as 8.30 a.m. to 3.30 p.m. as in the good old days. The extra hours could be used for sports, music, dancing etc. organised by the school. This way there will be no need for tuition and the children will be gainfully occupied till the parents return home.

The people who are promoting this scheme either have no kids or are being ignorant. Its the prerogative of the parent to decide if the child goes to sunday school or not. What you need first is the education. Wihout passing the exams the children will not get gainfully emplyoyed and eventualy will be forced to unlawful methods to earn money.

Tuition is a necessity for students to compete for places in the Universities and in the jobs market. In a developing country such as ours, its a essential that students do their best and get the best education via school & tuition to compete for the limited number of jobs available. The Government should butt out and not be involved in banning this or that. Its left to the Parents of the children to decide how and what help they need in their studies. Religion is a choice or more of an accident of birth. A child born to a Buddhist , Hindu, Muslim or Christian parent would follow the parents religion; that alone proves that religion is a pure accident of birth.

Are you insane? Parents will do whatever possible to give their kids the competitive advantage. Parents know best how to bring up their children. Banning private tution will only help the elite schools who can attract the best teachers. This is the JVP mentality which think they know best and everything should be state regulated.

i dont agree with this at all. What about non-Buddhists and non-Christians? Their holy days are not Sunday. Why stop these students from using their free days for tuition? People should be allowed to make their own choices. That's at the heart of democracy. And of Buddhists, why can't a student attend sunday class in the morning and go for tuition in the afternoon or evening? Only an idiot would think it's an excellent idea.

Not only poya and sunday tution but ALL tution should be banned and schools should teach the curriculum as in the old days. What is the point of having schools if all students have to go for tution in addition. This is an Asian fashion that does not exist elsewhere!

very bad precedent. people must have the right to have a religion or not.if any one does tuition on poya day he must be allowed to do so. we must not follow the policies of saudi arabia. religious police. no one should be forced to go to temple instead of classes. and christian and muslims must be allowed to go to classes on that day.

This is a good move, but why are we deciding for only a part of this country. Definitely Matara and Sabaraganuwa student have to face an unfair situation. If we take AL examination then this will effect badly on these two locations.

Ha ha Haaa... Already too many holidaying and fun in Sri Lanka. Now the people who are interested in studies also will be affected coz of the restriction called on in the name of Buddha Poya day.
If Buddha was here.. He would have definitely told every one to study and work hard. He wont allow every one to go for Holiday !!! Dono where its going to end in Sri Lanka !!!!

More religious intolerance. It should be the choice of the parents of children whether to allow tuition or not and not the government . The government should not intrude into the private lives of families. This happens only in theocracies and not in democracies. Personal liberties should be respected as long as they are law abiding. This is nothing but intrusion into the private lives of citizens to satisfy the religious leaders and not the will of the people.

Make rules to attend temple on poyadays for all the Govt & Private Buddhist workers. Otherwise no need of leave for that person. Poyadays are holidays only for participating in religous activities. Not to do other works.

God, The country is going from being 'mad' to 'bonkers'. Were in the world is any student prohibitted from conducting their educational activities during a holiday.

Even with this rule what gurantee that the kids would flock to the temples in numbers??? They will rather prefer a good game of soft ball cricket to while away their time. So ban playing cricket also on a poya days.

Now that we are lucky to have a former tuition master at the helm of affairs in the Education Ministry,lets get some help from him to ban tuitions altogether from this country and get the teachers to do their jobs properly for which they are paid. On the other hand, one cant legislate to force religion down the throats of people.
