United National Party (UNP) Parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweera, who is in the midst of speculation about plans to join the government, had shelved his decision after the party assured to address his grievances, the Daily Mirror learns.

Amid rising speculation in political circles about such a crossover, UNP Parliamentarians such as Ravi Karunanayake, Eran Wickramaratne and Karu Jayasuriya met him during the past few days.

Mr. Samaraweera is reported to have had a spat with the party's Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa about the UNP stance on the Presidential Election.

"Mangala is upset because we are not doing what we have got to do. We tried to convince him to stay with us. There were some grievances but we undertook to sort them out. Now it is over. The situation is under control as of now," a UNP MP who wished to remain unnamed said.

Earlier, there was speculation that Mr. Samaraweera was planning to crossover after the Government offered him a Cabinet portfolio. (Kelum Bandara)

There was an earlier report he was having discussions with SF in Singapore. That was a surprise but SF could do with a high jumper like Mangala. Sadly no much positive contribution from him to the UNP so far and he is not a true Green so better let him go.

Mangala is a man without principles. There are no permanent friends and enemies for him in politics except his own interest

i think you better go and it will happened sooner or later. we public dont have any trust on you and others who crossed one party to another after elected from the particular party votes. we have no objection anyone resign from the parliament seat and crossover to contest from another party

    rukshan1 Thursday, 06 November 2014 02:50 PM

Sajith is playing a very selfish game of politics... he wants ranil to loose and his path to be cleared up... hope ranil wins... and truthfully we need respectable politicians like Mangala in the country!!! he was the only minister who went to opposition when everyone was going after perks!

We still lack proper directions, intelligence, guidance and discipline. Serve ahs help the country and people should be the priority than personal gain.

Is he planning to crossover wearing clothes or naked?

    AIA Thursday, 06 November 2014 10:00 AM

Why did he cross over to the UNP in the first place seven years ago, if he wants to go back to accept a cabinet portfolio now. He could have remained a minister throughout. Our politicians neither have principals nor rationale.

    jana_hitha Thursday, 06 November 2014 09:47 AM

it is crazy to think his cross ovr will benefit d government tht d govt wud accept him for their side. Mangala carries a negative vote impact. via DM Android App

    Southpaw Thursday, 06 November 2014 09:34 AM

you would compromised your principals as well as the trust of Voters if you decided to crossover. Besides it is like insulting the party that provided you a platform to fight against Corruption and Nepotism .
