Malinga announces test retirement

22 April 2011 12:32 pm - 73     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Sri Lanka's charismatic pace- bowler Lasith Malinga announced his retirement from Test cricket on Friday stating that he wished to prolong his international career.

The unorthodox pacer also clarified that he is available for selection for all Sri Lanka's ODI and T20 matches.

The announcement came after the pacer was accused of choosing the cash-awash Indian Premier League over national duties. The Mumbai Indian pacer is the leading wicket-taker in the ongoing IPL 4.

Malinga said in a statement released to media that his physical health is fine, but his 'degenerative knee problem' needs to be managed carefully.

Maliga said that he has been advised by the national team physiotherapist and orthopaedic consultant that his condition will deteriorate when fielding or bowling for prolonged periods.  (timesofindia)

Best of luck. Please retire from ODI'S AND T20'S we have
    enough talented Guys.

    jerome Saturday, 23 April 2011 06:29 AM

dear lisa.......any fool will understand that this player malinga is behind IPL money and has betrayed our motherland. next step he will be a freelance cricketer and not sign a contract with the cricket board. SLC must kick him out of all forms of cricket aswe have enough young cricketers who loves our country.

    cricketlovvv Saturday, 23 April 2011 06:21 AM

heeeee grate news ...... no problem Ravi Ratnayake will replace for him to squad

    Chandana Saturday, 23 April 2011 05:53 AM

    Dear Malinga,
Yes we know that you are not in a good physical position to play test cricket. But is it the right time to announce your retirement. Because we get the impression that you are making a reason to not to come back sri lanka.

The Patriot Saturday, 23 April 2011 05:26 AM

Sad to note Malinga chose the SF's path.

    I Hussein Saturday, 23 April 2011 05:29 AM

Maliya - Your suggestion is right had the players choose to play elsewhere ignoring the national duties. SL Cricket board has been involved in signing the contract and fixing the dates. I hate IPL but ones singed you must honour the contract. You cannot breach the contract due to political involvement or for revenge. Playing IPL also kind of practice.

    Tonto Saturday, 23 April 2011 04:27 AM

At least this guy sweats for his rewards. All the others are overfed and overblown arm chair patriots, that the difference. Let him make his own decisions.

    jude Saturday, 23 April 2011 03:52 AM

Wise decision Malinga. Now, you can concentrate only on IPL

Bee man Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:33 AM

His agent, Charlie Austin writes very nice statements and creates "injuries"...... he is responsible for this

    vajira Saturday, 23 April 2011 06:49 AM

Couldn't see as a man with a knee problem when running in and feilding for Mumbai Indians last night.

Sri Lankan Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:20 AM

Hello, In 20/20 Only 4 overs per day, ODI 10 overs. Test Cricket How may continuosly for 5 days! Would any one shouting saying playing for for money is ready accept the challange with a knee injury?

Think before you talk, don't be a another politician.

    Guru Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:20 AM

End of the day it's only MONEY, MONEY that counts.

Sri Lankan Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:00 AM

Typical Sri Lankan with short memory. Malinga told the media about his retirement from Test cricket due to injured knee before the WC2011. He may not have officially told to the SLC.
Now as a country we reverse the original decision because of a verbal decision of a minister.
He did his best for the country. Who does not need the money to live.
Please do not throw stones with out checking the full facts.

mervyn perera Saturday, 23 April 2011 01:02 AM

The Govt's Motto " Country first, money later for Cricketers and general Public. For Politicos " Money first and to hell with the country"

    Lisa Saturday, 23 April 2011 12:48 AM

You sound so jealous and bitter! Haha I think most of us are like that. Sitting on our chairs and judging the cricket team...

    Somapala Saturday, 23 April 2011 12:33 AM

Isn't only you and probably your Doctor knows about your body and physical capabilities. If somebody ask you can you swim across the Palk Strait. Just try and tell us without insulting Malinga.

    citizen1 Friday, 22 April 2011 10:50 PM

These days it's all about piggyback riding!

    Ceylonese Friday, 22 April 2011 10:42 PM

asoka abeywardena Saturday, 23 April 2011 09:35 AM

he is a born cricketer not a made cricketer...he suits to play one dayers only...let him do what he want...after all not a single patriot left in this country...people are frighten to be patriotic...

    Tilak Saturday, 23 April 2011 11:39 AM

You hit it the nail on the head !!!

Common Man Saturday, 23 April 2011 11:25 AM

Cricketers have contracts with SL Cricket Board with some pay already, If SLCB has no problem, its O.K. With us too.

    Peter Saturday, 23 April 2011 10:56 AM

    Money talks...(IPL) anti-Christ of Cricket

    yohanne Saturday, 23 April 2011 10:42 AM

Better to retire than playing under short sighted captains & selection committees.

    Commonsense Saturday, 23 April 2011 10:33 AM

Are the "patriots" samurdhi beneficiaries or are they stealing money from some where? Malinga has to live - so let him earn it the honest way, unlike politicians and bureaucrats who rob us in broad day light.

    raj Saturday, 23 April 2011 10:05 AM

People like you have short memory! have you forgotten what he has already done for the Sri Lankan Cricket. You of all people are ungrateful to him. If it were you, what you would have done? Do you want to prolong your career or destroy it. Malinga retired knowing if he played he will short career for him will have to retire early from all from of cricket.

Joseph Fernando Saturday, 23 April 2011 10:18 AM

Malinga everybody will make various comments, first and foremost thing is to look after your HEALTH. When you are older you will have to be in good health to enjoy life. What is the use of fame and riches if your health is not sound.Health is wealth they say.You have made a very wise decision. You have been great and a unique cricketer. And all the cricket fans all over the world will remember you for the unique bowling action you have.Look after your health now. I wish you all the very best.

    harry Friday, 22 April 2011 09:48 PM

Too much cricket and too many injuries.Blame the shorter versions of cricket and not the players.

    Hemali Saturday, 23 April 2011 09:22 AM

And what path have you chosen? Go donate your property to the government and sign up for the army to prove your patriotism ! And what about all your patriotic ministers? What path have they chosen if they are living in luxury while the country suffers.

    GanjaRabbit Saturday, 23 April 2011 09:01 AM

why blame malinga? Hundreds of Doctors engineers etc who learned their trade in govt universities at the expense of the poor man did and are doing the same. They migrate to Aus/UK etc for a better salary. maybe some of these 'patriot's who have commented here are also living abroad plying their trade that they learnt here.

    Chamibobby Saturday, 23 April 2011 08:08 AM

Should kick off from ODI and T20 as well. Srilanka do not required these kind of players.

    mohan Saturday, 23 April 2011 07:48 AM

brilient, you should be offered grass to eat instead of plate of rice.

    MT Saturday, 23 April 2011 07:51 AM

ha ha ha that's the story in a nutshell, well said

    kassa Saturday, 23 April 2011 07:52 AM

This is not the absolute decision he has taken. He can play Test even better than ODI. How ever final decision will be effected to his career.

    Nesh Saturday, 23 April 2011 07:12 AM

IPL is the cause for all these destruction. Its not only Malinga we may loose so many talented players because of IPL . The game is played for 2 months and If Malinga is going to play the whole tournament it will also stress his knee injury. Where is the logic ??

    genrath Friday, 22 April 2011 01:24 PM

every day the image i have about these players get tarnished....because of their greed for $$$

    MT Friday, 22 April 2011 02:45 PM

Hey, sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander...what makes you think we have patriots in our country, they are all cardboard patriots, let him also reap the rewards just like our shining examples in Miracle of Asia

    shane Friday, 22 April 2011 02:41 PM

    dear all,
Just because the king goes on a donkey the donkey thought the people are respecting him,but people were respecting the the king, like wise sri lanka malinga only respected without sri lanka malinga is nothing, hopefully he will be sent to cleanerson the IPL comming matches and will not even get a penny next IPL,ungreatful malinga, arjuna judged him very correctly.

Vishnu Gupta Friday, 22 April 2011 02:42 PM

Those of you who are critical of Malinga, let us know, 1) If you are a Sri Lankan living and or working overseas and 2) If you are in Sri Lanka, and are working for the private sector?

If you said yes to any of the above two questions, what motivated you? Service to country or money? Stop being hypocritical of this young man and let him decide like you decided.

    Mishraff Friday, 22 April 2011 02:17 PM

We know it is coming. Our selectors made him make this decision earlier than expected. We know how much he was struggling after that Galle Test. It is a very correct decision. Best of Luck to him to continue his career in other formats.

    kenny_fdo Friday, 22 April 2011 02:06 PM

This is what IPL does to other countries. players put the money before the country. it was the sri Lankans who backed Malinga through out his short carrier. and this is how he repays the country. i don't know who we should blame other than ourselves.

    paulraj Friday, 22 April 2011 02:04 PM

We like to see you mesmrise the opposition in all forms ,So get well soon mali.

    Darwin Friday, 22 April 2011 01:29 PM

Well the guy realized that you can not have the cake and eat the cake.

    rohandil Friday, 22 April 2011 01:30 PM

Sorry Malinga you choose the wrong time to retire from tests.

    Oshanda Friday, 22 April 2011 02:43 PM

    Kamal Friday, 22 April 2011 01:18 PM

    Dinesh Friday, 22 April 2011 01:10 PM

At the end of the day anyone need money to survive. Prolonging international career will ensure earning of money.

Nimal Pathirajah Friday, 22 April 2011 01:04 PM

Playing safe, eh. Test cricket is not financially rewarding. Brilliant move Malinga. You have really bowled a toe-crushing yorker.

    Maliya Friday, 22 April 2011 12:45 PM

Should drop him from ODI's as well. Doesnt matter how talented you are .. you shouldnt be playing for your country if you are not patriotic enough. We all know IPL is his "injury"

Tharaka Chanaka Friday, 22 April 2011 12:53 PM

Good move, test matches nowadays are pretty boring and time consuming.

    anton Friday, 22 April 2011 12:35 PM

    good choice

    yazir Friday, 22 April 2011 04:07 PM

gud choice that u can concentrate more on the shorter formats for a long time...cheers

Ministry of sports and Cricket broad responsible for that

    Silva Friday, 22 April 2011 05:01 PM

Dont blame you mate, any sportsman's earnig capacity is limited up to mid 30s, so amke your money in IPL when you are fit and young. WHen you are old you will be history.

    jerome Friday, 22 April 2011 05:16 PM

.selectors must drop him from odi 50 overs and 20/20 too. then he can play only for IPL the curse of world cricket.

    A.J Friday, 22 April 2011 12:48 PM

Good news ! please take the other 7 also with you and play only the IPL. Sri Lanka can find a bunch of youg cricketers again , who treats country first

Senior Citizen Friday, 22 April 2011 04:05 PM

What about the politicos and the others of the SLC Committees - just money on the back of the cricketers - even injured.

    kamal Friday, 22 April 2011 04:01 PM

    Greedy crecketer
Malinga....... first learn to be a man who can represent a country first.

Senior Citizen Friday, 22 April 2011 03:57 PM

Why don't most of you understand his plight - he wants to serve the country as best as he can in spite of his injury.

    A.D Friday, 22 April 2011 03:59 PM

    well said !

    DHA Friday, 22 April 2011 03:30 PM

Very sad we are truly gonna miss u....

    Guru4U Friday, 22 April 2011 03:03 PM

I think a whole bunch of people are pissed off that the national team lost the final match in the World Cup, and now there are a few tantrums on both sides.

    Shamil Friday, 22 April 2011 02:59 PM

Good decision. Being patriotic (for a cricketer) doesnt mean you should risk your career. They dont play till they are 60. Given Malinga`s knee problem, he can prolong his career by giving up test cricket.

    Oshanda Friday, 22 April 2011 02:53 PM

We dont want anothar Sohib Akthar, the current work load a player have to face in the international calander and only match winner in SL balling team after murali retaier it is the correct decesion, there is a different balling four overs per match or 15 -20 per day.
Wish you all the best Malli
