Mahela steps down as VC

Sri Lankan vice captain Mahela Jayawardane has written to Sri Lanka Cricket informing them that he has stepped down from the Vice Captaincy of the national team, Secretary of Sri Lanka Cricket Nishantha Ranatunga said.

Nishantha Ranatunga making a statement said “Mahela had taken up the Vice Captaincy duty only till the end of the World Cup. This morning, he handed in a letter stating that he did not like continuing as the Vice Captain of the team”.

Yesterday, World Cup captain Kumar Sangakkara handed in his letter of resignation, citing the need for the team to be led by a player at his peak, at the next World Cup in Australia and New Zealand in 2015.

Really good. Others should follow this example. These to fine gentlemen have been given two chances in last and this world cup to lead the team. They did a good job but unfortunately not enough to bring the cup. We have to find & groom a better one keep Sanga and Mahela in the team as it is necessary. We always have a weakness in Srilanka cricket that somebody have to show the door to the senior players to leave the team.
Hope they learn what is better for Srilanka cricket and leave on their own when it is time and help the national team to be a winning team as always.

I don't think that the decisions are politically influenced, but, keeping with the tradition of grooming another for the next WC. however, what we failed to do was to have a different Vice captain to Mahela and handed over the captancy after the WC. Nothing to do with Mahela - one of the greats of our time, but, about our policy of appointing captains - A win would not have made a difference to my knowladge, but, considering age, Sanga could go on to handle another WC. May be have a new Wicket Keeper and stay in the team only as a batsman.
