Mahela, Sanga under political pressure: JVP

The JVP today charged senior Sri Lankan cricketers Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara were being subjected to undue influence by government politicians to accept the captaincy of the national team.

JVP MP Vijitha Herath said both Mahela and Kumar had expressed reluctance to accept the captaincy because of this pressure. The JVP MP charged the government was using the cancer hospital of these cricketers as a tool to pressurise them.

Mr. Hearh said there was no issue with either Mahela or Kumar taking over from T.M. Dilshan but stressed the new captain should not be subjected to political pressure.

He said cricket was plunged into crisis and would remain in that situation as long as the sports minister interfered in the selection process. (Yohan Perera)

I think Angelo should take over the captaincy. We need young blood to move forward.

    Lazz Monday, 23 January 2012 09:36 AM

to be honest he hasn't .... but we cant forget the sensational century in the WC final . had it not been for mehala we wouldnt have even put 220 on the board. but i do believe he should take up the captaincy if he is to be part of the team. really dont wanna see dilshan leading the team at the mcg on the 2nd of march. he just lacks the skill to think ahead. 3rd odi is a prime example

    prem Monday, 23 January 2012 08:44 AM

when did mehela last played a good game for the team/?

Steve Waugh Monday, 23 January 2012 08:02 AM

Mate, they are lowest paid professional cricketers in world. On top that, they been paid since March, 2011. Politics is the problem.

    terence Monday, 23 January 2012 05:41 AM

How bancrupt the SLC board is they cannot appoint a captian
    without pressuerisng players..

    God Monday, 23 January 2012 04:51 AM

Do not blame politics for everything. It is the responsibility of national cricket team to perform and they are highly paid professional with years of experience. They have to answer their failure and not government.

    Labby Monday, 23 January 2012 04:50 AM

Before thinking of Angelo Mathews taking over the captaincy he needs to have his head above his shoulders while batting.

Steve Waugh Monday, 23 January 2012 04:47 AM

So far Dilshan has been the worst Sri Lankan captain ever. Time for tactically sensual & calm Mahela Jayawardena to guide SL cricket once again. SL needs services from a experienced thinking cricketer like Mahela. Hope the sports minister stays out of cricket once Mahela takes back the captaincy.

Third Man Monday, 23 January 2012 04:44 AM

    What nonsense.
Angelo should be punished for not supporting Dilshan. he is part of the group that purposely let down the team not playing to win matches so that Dil can be stripped off. He should never be selected and he is the most overrated player in SL cricket. What has he done in this SA one day and Test series.

Imran Hussein Monday, 23 January 2012 04:35 AM

Mathiew is a useful player but he didnt show any single sign yet as to why he should be the skipper. Lot of talaent is there in the team but no motivation or high moral. Mahela must take over the captaincy from further disaster. Most people lost interests in our cricket right now. Political involvement playing a major role in the sub continent unfortunatly.

    Rosh Monday, 23 January 2012 04:43 AM

For me, he is more of show off player / campaigner than a true warrior. He must mold himself in to the captainship material, and else would be TM Dilshan Season 2

    Ananda Monday, 23 January 2012 04:33 AM

Elama ela kiri ! Well said !

    Ananda Monday, 23 January 2012 04:32 AM

Come on JVP, keep your dirty hands off cricket ! What do you know about cricket anyway ?

    Api nodanna cricket !

    siri Monday, 23 January 2012 04:11 AM

    Vijitha , "api nodanna cricket"

Nicky Karunarathna Monday, 23 January 2012 02:56 AM

Dilshan should not remove from captaincy as he has done tremendouly well under trying conditions. Mhahela or Kumar both are good cricketers, but they cannot perfom magic. Could they? Now without Mahela, if SL can win two matches with Dilshan captiancy - what extra formula he got up in his sleeve? This is also like calling Samaraweera, Samaraweera business to ODI when he is only good for test cricket!

    Mayani Monday, 23 January 2012 02:54 AM

If we want to have a good national cricket team, politics and corruption should be kept out. Simple.

    Wara Sunday, 22 January 2012 02:51 PM

The answer is to run SL Cricket as a non governmental entity..

    Champ Monday, 23 January 2012 02:45 AM

I think Angelo should take over the captaincy. We need young blood to move forward.

    Abdul Monday, 23 January 2012 02:41 AM

I think it is better for our politicians NOT to comment on our cricket or cricketers, now this has become a fashion, to drag our cricketers to the election platform & parliament. Let us leave cricketers alone,

    kris Monday, 23 January 2012 02:15 AM

Bankruft JVP begers hands off from SL cricket, we know your history , you can't get more votes from crickect fans making these statements, are you planing to make crickets trade union and start stikes, mind your own bankruft political business without interfearing to SL cricket

Sri Minnal Sunday, 22 January 2012 09:12 PM

Both Mahela aand Sanga are good captains. Can the politicians leave the cricketers on their own?

    kumaraya Sunday, 22 January 2012 08:22 PM

Who are you to talk? The bane of our very existence as a nation in every activity is the political interference. It is just that every politician has vested interests in every sphere of our lives.

    Rajaratnam Sunday, 22 January 2012 08:06 PM

JVP dont drag your dirty politics in to Sanga and Mahela. please you do your politics with government without harming to these great cricketers.

    heiya Sunday, 22 January 2012 07:42 PM

Mahela and Sanga have their own ministry, " The Ministry of Crab" , Check out at the Old dutch Hospital. No worries!

    KOSGEDIYA Sunday, 22 January 2012 06:21 PM

WHAT DOES THE MINISTER KNOW ABOUT MANAGING CRICKET?

LET PROFESSIONALS RUN THE CRICKET BOARD.
    KEEP THE CLOWNS AWAY.

Tilak Ratnasekera Sunday, 22 January 2012 06:03 PM

I doubt whether Mahela or Sanga can be influenced by politicians or cricket pundits. Dilshan's failed captaincy does not reflect on his cricket but on the guidence given to him and his weakness as a leader.I hope politicians does not damage the impact Mahela and Sanga has made not only in Cricket but also as great Social Role models.Tilak

    Yasalalatissa Sunday, 22 January 2012 04:34 PM

    Mahela go ahead.

    Esala Sunday, 22 January 2012 04:12 PM

    Useless talk.

    Bigsam Sunday, 22 January 2012 03:59 PM

    Damn straight!

    Anagarika Sunday, 22 January 2012 03:45 PM

Let' politicians' kids to play the game! They are the best!!

    nandasri Sunday, 22 January 2012 03:16 PM

Dilshan has got back to form. He should be allowed to continue as captain for sometime

    Prathithaban Sunday, 22 January 2012 02:54 PM

Yes i agrred 7 Mr Namal rajapakse also must stay away from cricket issues.
